Description

The Area Manager is responsible for managing all production activities within a major zone on a Federal Fleet Renewal (FFR) vessel. The position is responsible for direct line management of pre-erection, erection, final outfitting and testing activities in the respective zone. The position is responsible for safety, quality, cost, and schedule performance for all production and test activities. The Area Manager coordinates work activities of team members and subcontractors with Vancouver Shipyards’ (VSY) work. The Area Manager is also responsible for monitoring and reporting vessel status and performance to the Director, Ship Construction and Program Management personnel.

The Area Manager reports to the Director, Ship Construction. The Area Manager is supported with Integrated Team Leaders to manage execution of work by charge-hands and workers supplied by trade managers and Foremen.
Duties/Accountabilities

Leads, manages, directs and controls all pre-erection and on-board production and test activities from start of pre-erection to vessel delivery in assigned zone. Supervises assigned integrated team leaders during production and test phases of vessel construction.
Monitors and reports vessel status and performance in assigned zone for pre-erection, erection, final outfitting and testing activities. Provides status and performance summaries to Director, Ship Construction and program personnel. Reports safety, quality, cost and schedule performance for all work in assigned zone. Assists Director, Ship Construction in developing report formats and ensuring reports are distributed in a timely manner.
Coordinates the work and schedules of team members, subcontractors and vendors with VSY’s planned work. Determines sequencing and duration of work, and ensures work is completed with minimal disruption to other on going activities. Provides input on team members’, subcontractors’ and vendors’ work activities and schedules to Planning and Production Control for incorporation into detailed work schedules and resource forecasting.
Coordinates assigned zone schedules with the Program Office and Planning & Production Control Department by determining optimal sequencing of events in support of vessel major milestones.
Tracks and monitors progress of work for assigned zone at previous stages of construction. Ensures that transfer of work between stages is minimized, and necessary transfers are scheduled and incorporated into work plans.
Manages and controls zone budgets at the pre-erection and erection stages of construction. Works with the Program Office and Planning and Production Control to develop vessel budgets including development and allocation to various work packages.
Assists the Director, Ship Construction in the resolution of owner, regulatory body and statutory issues that arise in assigned zone during the construction period.
Works with Supply Chain procurement personnel to resolve material, quality and schedule issues.
Utilizing a behavioural based safety approach, champions’ safety in the applicable trade department. Leads by example, monitors department performance, counsels employees, initiates improvements and recognizes worker performance. Ensures that all department employees look to eliminate safety hazards at every opportunity.

Education and Experience

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Business. Degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering or registration as a licensed vessel engineer desirable.
5 years operations/production experience in a large manufacturing environment, preferably in the shipbuilding industry.
2 to 5 years experience supervising a workforce on a complex manufacturing project.

Detailed knowledge of shipbuilding construction methods and procedures.
Familiarity with ship systems including structural, mechanical, piping, electrical and coatings.
Strong technical capability to read and interpret complex specifications and detailed engineering drawings.
Proficiency working with detailed safety, quality, cost and schedule reports.
Knowledge of EVMS principles and their application in monitoring, reporting and controlling work activities.
Strong problem solving skills, analytical abilities and interpersonal skills.
