Process Intent

Essential Qualifications

Qualifications that are necessary for the work to be performed and that must be met in order for a person to be appointed.
Official Language Proficiency
English essential

Education

A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
Occupational Certification

Candidates must have a valid Canadian certificate of competency with STCW endorsement in one of the following disciplines:
Second-class Engineer (motor ship, steamship or combined).
OR
Master Intermediate Voyage
OR
University Degree or Diploma in Naval Architecture

*Please note that proof of a valid certificate or diploma must be presented.
Experience

Experience as Senior Engineer or a First Officer on ships
OR
Experience in the technical or operational management or inspection of ships
OR
Experience in the design or construction of ships.
Asset Qualifications

Qualifications that are not essential to perform the work, but that would benefit the organization or enhance the work to be performed currently or in the future.

Education

A bachelor’s degree from a recognized university.
Occupational Certification

Master Foreign Going Certificate of Competency with STCW endorsement valid for use on Canadian ships.

First-class Engineer Certificate of Competency (motor ship, steamship or combined) with STCW endorsement valid on Canadian ships.
Experience

Experience on tug boats or fishing vessels.

Experience in carrying out investigations into marine accidents.

Experience in Marine Safety Management Systems.

Experience in managing marine related programs or projects.

Technical experience in operating navigational and engine room information systems.
