Job Description

Seaspan’s Vancouver Shipyards has been selected under the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) to be Canada’s long-term partner for the building of Non-Combat vessels. This multi-billion dollar program will create stable work over the next decade and beyond, and see the construction of up to 17 ships to start

Seaspan has invested $200 million into modernizing the shipyard facilities and has resulted in the completion of four new fabrication buildings, a 300-ton shipbuilding gantry crane and load-out pier.

Your future career opportunity

As an Area Manager for vessel construction at Vancouver Shipyards, you will be responsible for managing all production activities within a major zone on up to 17 new vessels being constructed under the Federal Fleet Renewal (FFR) over the next decade and beyond. The position is responsible for direct line management of pre-erection, erection, final outfitting and testing activities in the respective zone. The position is responsible for safety, quality, cost, and schedule performance for all production and test activities. The Area Manager coordinates work activities of team members and subcontractors with Vancouver Shipyards’ (VSY) work. The Area Manager is also responsible for monitoring and reporting vessel status and performance to the Director, Ship Construction and Program Management personnel.

The Area Manager reports to the Director, Ship Construction. The Area Manager is supported with Integrated Team Leaders to manage execution of work by charge-hands and workers supplied by trade managers and Trade Supervisors.

Required Education, Qualifications, Skills

A bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Business. Degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering or registration as a licensed vessel engineer desirable.
5 years operations/production experience in a large manufacturing environment, preferably in the shipbuilding industry.
2 to 5 years experience supervising a workforce on a complex manufacturing project.
Demonstrated ability to lead a workforce in the execution and construction of a complex manufacturing product.
Ability to work effectively in a matrix organization that requires coordination of various trade personnel in support of common goals and objectives.
Detailed knowledge of shipbuilding construction methods and procedures.
Familiarity with ship systems including structural, mechanical, piping, electrical and coatings.
Strong technical capability to read and interpret complex specifications and detailed engineering drawings.
Proficiency working with detailed safety, quality, cost and schedule reports.
Knowledge of EVMS principles and their application in monitoring, reporting and controlling work activities.
Strong problem solving skills, analytical abilities and interpersonal skills.
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
