Duties:
The Marine Engineer operates main engines ensuring that all auxiliaries, pumps, ventilating fans, steering motors, and furnaces are functioning in a safe and efficient manner. The Marine Engineer inspects, repairs and maintains the mechanical and electrical equipment on the ferries. The Marine Engineer also assumes duties related to the Mate including arranging vehicles and/or cargo on deck, collecting tickets where applicable, and ensuring that the boat is clean at all times. The crews on the ferry work 12 hours shifts to support 24 hours operation, 365 days a year.

Qualifications:
Grade 10, or an acceptable equivalent combination of knowledge and experience. A minimum Small Vessel Machinery Operators certificate with three years mechanical experience. Marine Emergency Duties (MED) Certificates, Seafarer’s Marine Medical Certificate and Marine First Aid are required. Offer of employment is conditional upon the completion of all applicable background checks and confirmation of credentials, the results of which must be satisfactory to the employer or will result in termination of your employment.

Pay Grade: MOS 13

Salary Range: $43,543 - $44,722 Approximate Annual Salary

This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union. Under Article 13.01 of the Union Agreement between the Nova Scotia Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal and the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 1867, the following opportunity is being posted:

Classification: Ferry Operator / Engineer with Permit
Hourly Rate: $22.90 per hour

Openings exist for Casual Ferry Engineers with Permit on the Englishtown and/or Little Narrows Ferry. The successful candidates will work assigned shifts as required to replace permanent crew members during periods of vacation, sick leave, etc. As this is relief work, there is no guarantee of hours.

Applicant must have Grade Ten, or acceptable equivalent, plus MED’s, Seafarers medical, Marine Basic first aid and previous experience in Seamanship. A minimum Small Vessel Machinery Operators certificate required.
