Duties
The Marine Engineering Superintendent is one of two management positions reporting to the Director of Maintenance and Engineering (Marine Services). The position is responsible for the overall maintenance and upkeep of the 9 vessel fleet within the Maintenance & Engineering Division, including providing direction and guidance to personnel involved with repairs, maintenance and refit of all vessels; overseeing refits for each vessel owned by the Department including the development of the refit specification in conjunction with the respective Chief Engineer; liaising, directing, guiding and consulting professionals such as naval architects, Transport Canada surveyors, Classification Societies, Captains, Marine Engineers and shipyard personnel, etc.; responsible for the preparation and presentation of marine insurance claims and ensuring the Department’s fleet of 9 vessels are maintained in accordance with Canadian ferry standards, the Canada Shipping Act, respective Classification Society Rules, and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. The Marine Superintendent will liaise with the Vessel Replacement Program as required. The Marine Superintendent will be required to travel throughout Newfoundland and Labrador visiting the various Government operated vessels as requirements dictate. Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
This position requires extensive knowledge and experience in Marine Services. The incumbent is expected to exercise considerable independence and initiative and must possess effective organizational, analytical, interpersonal, communication, management/supervisory skills as well as the ability to work in a fast paced, dynamic, service-oriented environment. The incumbent must have proficient computer skills and experience with planned maintenance management programs. These qualifications would normally be acquired through graduation from a recognized post-secondary program in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture supplemented with experience in maintaining a fleet of Marine Vessels. The incumbent must, as a minimum, hold a Second Class Marine Engineering Certificate or have completed a diploma or degree program in Naval Architecture accompanied with experience working in a shipyard setting involved in retrofitting of vessels. Equivalent education, training and experience may be considered. Non- Canadian applicants are requested to submit documentation showing they are eligible to work in Canada.
