Job Title: Chief or Watchkeeping Engineer
Vessel: F/V Osprey No 1., 56 m, 2024 gross ton freezer stern trawler, built in 1998
Reports To: Captain and Owner or Chief Engineer

Job Summary
The Engineer is responsible for maintenance, operation, and repair of all vessel electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and freezing systems onboard the F/V Osprey No.1. The Chief is assisted by a watchkeeping engineer. (with a class 4 Motor Ship certification or higher)

Essential Duties
To perform this job successfully, the applicant must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Repair and Maintenance:
To maintain the ship in a state of readiness at all times
Oversee and maintain all systems including engineering, electrical, hydraulic, and freezing.
Follow system specified recommended maintenance programs.
Participate in dockside repairs and maintenance including yearly shipyard work.
Supervisory:
Direct supervision of second engineer
Train any new or assistant engineer
Administrative:
Keep vessel maintenance records and inventories.
Maintain up to date logs for all equipment.
Report repair and maintenance issues to Captain and Owner
Make requisition for required parts, supplies, etc., as needed and forward to office staff
Safety and Security
Required to follow company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures
Conduct periodic inspections of antipollution systems, i.e. oily water separators, air filters, etc.
Prepare the vessel for all Lloyds/ Transport Canada inspections
Be familiar with the ISM Code and its requirements
Be familiar with all duties under the Emergency Response Activities

Qualifications
An applicant must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Minimum certification required
Must have a Fourth Class Transport Canada Motor Certificate (4M) or greater
Must pass the Seafarers Medical Exam
Commercial Fishing Licence ($60 purchased from DFO)
Drug Testing: The successful applicant will be presented with a contract giving permission for random drug testing.
An applicant must also have strong knowledge of support systems, such as oily water separators, lube oil separators, fuel centrifuges, shaft generators, variable pitch propeller systems, air compressors, pumps, hydraulics, water makers, plumbing, (both water and fuel), refrigeration, heating and air conditioning.
Communication Skills
Must be able to read, analyse and interpret systems manuals, technical bulletins, inspection reports and government regulations.
Must be able to communicate effectively with Captain, crew and Owner.

Work Schedule
At sea: The Chief Engineer and second can determine if they work a 12 on 12 off, or a 6 on 6 off rotation. A trip averages14 days. The fishing crew work 2 trips on 1 trip off. This trip schedule can be negotiated.

Accommodations
The Engineer has his own stateroom on the officer deck, comprising of a large seating area, bedroom and private bathroom with shower. There is a laundry on the officer's deck.
Hot meals are prepared three times daily. A cold meal is set out at 11 pm.

Vessel Particulars
The Osprey No. 1 catches fish that are head and gutted and frozen on board. The fishing and factory operations work 24 hour days. There are 22 crew onboard. The Osprey only fishes in Canadian waters off of the West Coast of British Columbia.

This is what applies.

222. Every fishing vessel that is engaged on a voyage set out in column 1 of the table to this section and that has a propulsive power within a range set out in column 2 shall have on board, and its authorized representative shall employ, for each certificate set out in column 3 that corresponds to that voyage and range, one engineer who holds, at least that certificate appropriate to the vessel’s propulsion type.

Engineering Watch

223. Subject to section 253, the chief engineer of a vessel shall ensure, in consultation with the master, that its voyage is planned and that an engineering watch is maintained in accordance with Parts 2, 3, and 3-2 of section A-VIII/2 of the STCW Code.

224. (1) Subject to section 226, the chief engineer of a vessel shall ensure, in consultation with the master, that the engineering watch of the vessel consists of

(a) in the case of a vessel referred to in subsection (2), a person in charge of the engineering watch who, at a minimum,

(i) holds a certificate that complies with section 218 and is required by a table to subsection 219(1), 220(1) or 221(1) or the table to section 222,


(ii) holds


(C) in the case of a fishing vessel that has a propulsive power of more than 2 000 kW, a Fourth-class Engineer certificate; and

(b) in the case of a vessel that has a propulsive power of more than 750 kW, an additional person who holds, at a minimum, an Engine-room Rating certificate.

(2) Paragraph (1)(a) applies if the vessel is

(b) a fishing or cargo vessel that has a propulsive power of more than 750 kW;

(3) Paragraph (1)(b) does not apply if

(a) the machinery essential to the safe operation of the vessel has automatic operational features that, while the machinery is in operation, provide fuel to the machinery and lubricate it from a supply of lubricant that is sufficient to enable the machinery to operate continuously at full load for a period of at least 24 hours; and


(b) the propulsion system of the vessel is remotely controlled from the bridge or the vessel is not manoeuvring.
