Duties

This eligibility list will be used to fill short term, temporary, call-in Marine Engineer (2nd Class) positions as they become available. Applicants are advised that positions will be of variable duration and terminate on or before March 31st, 2016, subject to possibility of extension. DUTIES: The Chief Engineer is responsible for the mechanical operation of the engine room and its auxiliaries. The successful candidate is required to act as engineer in charge of the engine room and auxiliaries by supervising engine room staff and participating in activating, operating and controlling the main engines. The incumbent inspects, cleans and performs electronic, plumbing, mechanical and hydraulic repairs and maintenance in accordance with departmental preventative maintenance schedules; ensures that back-up systems are in operational order; accompanies the vessel as required during refit schedules and assists technical personnel in carrying out repairs and alterations; and maintains an adequate level of supplies and routine parts. The incumbent will maintain a current defect list, update the maintenance program as required and write a refit specification to be submitted to the Marine Superintendent prior to scheduled refit. The incumbent will complete a log abstract at the end of each shift for submission to Marine Headquarters and maintain an up-to-date Chief Engineer’s Logbook. The successful candidate may have to maintain equipment vital to the service such as shore generators and wharf lighting equipment that is located outside of the vessel. Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess considerable knowledge and experience in marine engineering and the operation and maintenance of marine diesel, hydraulic and electrical equipment. Strong organizational, communication, supervisory, and interpersonal skills are required along with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. These would normally be acquired through completion of related course work in the electrical and mechanical trades with appropriate marine related courses and training and experience. Possession of a 2nd Class Motor Engineer’s Certificate issued by Transport Canada, and associated endorsements, MEDs, Marine Basic First Aid and Marine Medical is required. Candidates who possess a 3rd Class Motor Engineer’s Certificate issued by Transport Canada and associated endorsements, MEDs, Marine Basic First Aid and Marine Medical with at least five years of recent, relevant marine engineer experience may be considered. Copies of Sea Testimonials must accompany the application from 3rd Class Motor Engineers to illustrate this experience. Completion of Passenger Safety Management Course and Specialized Passenger Safety Management Course would be considered assets. Incumbent will be expected to participate in any safety course training, as offered and required by the Department. Applicants must submit copies of valid a 2nd Class Motor Engineer’s Certificate issued by Transport Canada and associated endorsements, MEDs, Marine Basic First Aid, Marine Medical or valid a 3rd Class Motor Engineer’s Certificate issued by Transport Canada and associated endorsements, MEDs, Marine Basic First Aid, Marine Medical with copies of Sea Testimonials with their application. Failure to do so shall result in an application being screened out.
