Irving Shipbuilding has earned a reputation for building the most versatile ship assist, coastal towing and escort tugs, as well as high quality, complex vessels. With Eastern Canada's most extensive array of docks, slipways, steel fabrication shops, outfit and machine shops and blast and paint operations, ISI also provides a full range of ship repair, refit and conversion services.

Through its engineering arm, Fleetway Inc., located at 155 Chain Lake Drive, Halifax NS, Irving Shipbuilding provides its clients with a full spectrum of high value services. From initial concept development to final delivery, Fleetway’s team of engineers, technologists and designers consult on vessel design and conversions as well as marine and offshore structures and modules. Fleetway operates as an independent company within ISI. For over 30 years Fleetway has been providing quality services to the public and private sectors.

Oceanic Consulting Corporation (OCC) provides contract research services in hydrodynamics and Arctic engineering. Using advanced numerical simulation tools and one of the world's most comprehensive collections of physical modeling facilities, Oceanic provides consulting, research and development on the broadest range of marine systems. Oceanic Consulting Corp was established in 1993 and is headquartered in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Oceanic became a subsidiary of Fleetway, Inc. in 2011.

Fleetway and Oceanic have a staff of over 170 personnel and maintain offices in Halifax, NS (headquarters), Ottawa, ON, St John’s NL, and Victoria, BC.

The Role

This is a full time staff role based in Halifax NS.

The Vice President of Fleetway, Inc. (Fleetway) and Oceanic Consulting Corp. (Oceanic) is a critical strategic role within Irving Shipbuilding. This VP has full Profit and Loss line authority, responsibility, and accountability over all functions performed by Fleetway and Oceanic.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the President of ISI, the Vice President of Fleetway and Oceanic is expected to enhance and grow the existing business lines and develop new business opportunities to grow the combined Fleetway and Oceanic business base. They will work closely with the other Vice Presidents that also report to the President of ISI for NSPS and other program support, technical resource sharing, human resources practices, financial accounting and performance, and legal support and guidance:

The role will encompass the following responsibilities:
Report to the President on all matters affecting Fleetway and Oceanic performance including financial, schedule, technical quality, and safety performance against established baselines and budgets.
Increase profitability levels and enhance financial performance across the organization. Achieve and exceed the EBITDA, operating expense and revenue objectives as in the agreed-upon annual plan.
Lead all aspects of strategic and tactical planning and execution to achieve required financial and revenue growth goals for both Fleetway and Oceanic. In particular, develop and implement a marketing strategy and growth plan for expanding Oceanic’s market share in the offshore oil and gas industry segment.
Lead the planning and execution of Fleetway’s and Oceanic’s long term and day to day facility and equipment strategy and maintenance.
Regularly communicate status and issues relating to the business, customers, partners and employees so that the President of ISI has a real appreciation of the status of the business.
Identify, recruit and retain key professional talent to support the performance.
Motivate people by communication, involvement and ownership.
Maintain close relationships, coordination, and collaboration with all the respective Managers within Fleetway and Oceanic.
Develop departmental plans, including business, production and organizational priorities.
Ensure harmonious relationships are maintained with all key customers, suppliers, and partner organizations.

Professional Experience/Qualifications
The Vice President of Fleetway and Oceanic is likely to have the following profile:
Extensive experience running a technical organization with a focus on customer service, growth and profitability – preferably in the marine industry.
Held a senior front-line position in a medium sized organization. Is currently likely to be a General Manager or Head of a Business Unit
Experience in managing teams in excess of 100 people.
Considerable knowledge in the Naval, Coast Guard, commercial marine and offshore industry sectors
Strong strategic management skills with the ability to embrace the vision of the company.
Ability to work with complex contracts and financing arrangements.
Previous successful experience of commercially dealing with Governmental authorities.
Ability to provide strategic, operational and financial support and advice to the President of ISI.
Commitment towards continuous improvement/lean initiatives across all functions, by leading change initiatives.
An effective process, work flow and systems designer; good at figuring out what to measure to track progress.
Someone who can quickly separate the mission-critical assignments and senses what the next most important tasks will be.
A person who can connect with people with a sense of enthusiasm, passion and commitment for their work and encourage them to do their best.
Have dealt with the process of strong growth and expansion and how that impacts the organization.
A degree in Engineering or Science is required with a graduate degree preferred. A graduate degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering would be a strong asset.
An MBA would an asset.

All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
