Work environment

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is a national institution that contributes to maintaining a safe, secure, accessible and sustainable maritime transportation system. It is Canada's civilian maritime organization and plays an essential role in fulfilling the Government of Canada's maritime mandate. The CCG is also a symbol of Canada's sovereignty, providing Canadians with a federal presence and sense of safety and security on all three coasts and the Great Lakes.

The Canadian Coast Guard requires future leaders. Upon graduation from the 4 year Officer Training Program, each new officer receives a commercial certificate from Transport Canada which also grants them credits for higher certification. Such credits facilitate the acquisition of Master Mariner or Chief Engineer certification. This represents an investment in training, plus approximately 10 to 12 years experience within the Canadian Coast Guard. This experience is necessary to fulfill the operational requirements of higher certification for the larger Canadian Coast Guard vessels, and other related leadership positions.

Becoming a Fleet Officer requires diligence, intellectual effort, and commitment. The Officer Training Program provides Officer Cadets with a complete and thorough understanding of the ship's operation and the latest in marine technology. If you are selected as an Officer-Cadet in the Officer Training Program, you do not pay tuition, room and board or books; in fact, we pay you. In addition, you receive free uniforms and clothing and one trip home each year.

The Canadian Coast Guard Officer Training Program will provide:
- Bachelor of Technology Degree in Nautical Sciences granted in partnership with Cape Breton University;
- Commercial Certification as a Ship's Officer;
- Employment across Canada, within the Canadian Coast Guard;
- Opportunities for career advancement;
- Tuition-free education;
- Free room and board;
- Monthly allowance starting at $375 during training (additional allowances while at sea);
- Second language training.
