What you’ll be doing…

Over the next 12 months, we anticipate vacancies in our Faculty group at the Nautical Institute. Are you a seasoned mariner interested in developing the next generation of seafarers? If so, we would like to start the conversation now to get you thinking about joining the Nova Scotia Community College’s renowned Nautical Institute in beautiful Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

As part of the School of Trades and Technology Faculty team, you will develop and deliver curriculum in support of the Nautical Institute’s Marine Engineering Technology Diploma, Marine Navigation Technology Diploma or their respective Advanced Diplomas. You will assess learning, provide consultation, assist in the development and preparation of related course materials and provide academic and career advisement. Relevant safety awareness training related to your trade as outlined in the program curriculum will also be included. You will liaise with business, industry, Transport Canada and the Nova Scotia Department of Education, and represent the College when required. You will also maintain currency in your industry practices. You will provide leadership to ensure health and safety practices and procedures are followed to ensure a high level of safety awareness throughout the entire program that meets or exceeds industry standards.

As an esteemed Faculty in our Nautical Institute:
For Marine Engineering you hold a Canadian STCW Certificate of Competency at a Second Engineer/Chief Engineer level or a non-Canadian STCW Certificate of Competency at a Chief Engineer level. An Advanced Diploma in Marine Engineering or a Bachelor of Engineering in Marine or Naval Architecture would be considered an asset. You have a minimum of five years relevant occupational experience working on board ships as a ship’s Engineer or working in a shore office related to the shipping Industry; or the recognized equivalency.

You possess a thorough understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of:

Marine Engineering, Ship Construction, Naval Architecture, Marine Electrical Technology, Marine Engineering Knowledge, as well as basic engineering subjects
Modern Marine Engineering Practices as they pertain to the International Marine Environmental Pollution Prevention Regulations
Canada Shipping Acts and Regulations
Marine Engineering Education and Training

For Marine Navigation , you have a Bachelor of Maritime Studies and/or Diploma in Nautical Science- Navigation and/or an STCW Certificate of Competency as a Master Mariner combined with a minimum of five years relevant occupational experience sailing as a Ship’s Officer or Engineer; or the recognized equivalency

You possess a thorough understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of:

Navigation at the Management Level
Cargo Handling and Stowage at the Management Level
Navigation Safety & Instruments, Meteorology, Celestial Navigation, General Ship Knowledge, Ship Construction & Stability and Chartwork & Pilotage
Canada Shipping Acts and Regulations
Transport Canada Marine Navigation regulations

If you have teaching or training experience it would be an asset however NSCC’s Community College Education Diploma Program (CCEDP) is a two-year diploma that provides a foundation in adult education principles. NSCC supports Faculty to successfully complete this program within their probationary period

In addition, you have safety training including: WHMIS and OH&S and demonstrated knowledge and proficiency in computer systems and software packages, internet and e-mail technology.

Above all, you are innovative, committed to life-long learning and demonstrate a commitment to community involvement. You are familiar with the concepts of portfolio education. And your desire and enthusiasm to teach students with diverse backgrounds and knowledge, along with your superb presentation, interpersonal and team building skills, make you an ideal candidate.

As a condition of employment, Faculty and Professional Support employees at NSCC must complete NSCC’s Community College Education Diploma Program (CCEDP). CCEDP is a two-year diploma that provides a foundation in adult education principles. CCEDP is a significant investment of NSCC in the learning and development of new employees. To achieve regular status; all probationary, full or part-time Faculty and Professional Support employees of the College must successfully complete CCEDP within their probationary period. Term full-time Faculty who are employed for twelve or more months are also required to participate in CCEDP.
