Job Description

SUMMARY: The QMED will support the safe operation of the vessel in a fashion that will promote and maintain the utmost integrity and the highest standard of customer service within the industry, while being responsible for upkeep and maintenance of the vessel’s engineering plant as directed by the Assistant Engineer. This position will serve aboard a High-Speed Transport vessel which provides passenger and vehicle ferry service between Portland, Maine and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Rotations are 21 days on/7 days off.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Note that the below are normal for this position but are not all-inclusive. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Participate in the safe operation of the vessel within the legal requirements of the USCG and other pertinent regulatory agencies under the supervision of the Chief Engineer
Actively participate in the safe the operation and maintenance of the vessel in accordance with Seaward Services Caretaking Operations Manual, SMS and MSC's HST Technical Manual
Assist in providing vessel security duties as required
Participate in drills with Marine and Non-Marine crew as directed by the Master or with engineering crew
Routinely reports condition of engine department equipment, machinery, and personnel; unusual developments; and repair progress to supervisor
Maintain a safe engine room, monitor safety issues and report hazards to the senior officer immediately
Defer to, and act in support of the master in the event of a real or simulated emergency
Performs general duties, including wiping oil; maintaining tools; and cleaning, preparing, and painting of machinery, equipment, and related spaces
Oils and greases moving parts, such as gears, shafts and bearings of engines and deck and auxiliary equipment Lubricates moving parts of propulsion engines and auxiliary equipment. Pumps bilges, and cleans strainers, filters, and centrifuges
Examines machinery during scheduled rounds for proper operation; maintains proper temperatures and pressures; and records data in engineering log
Follow the onboard chain of command and duties assigned under the Watch Quarter Station Bill
Perform daily/weekly/monthly preventative maintenance as directed
Assists engineer in overhauling, adjusting and repairing machinery, engines and pumps
Assists engineers with maintenance and repair of engine room equipment and spaces; loading freshwater, stores, and bunkers; connecting to shore side power and water, and maintenance and inventory of spare parts
Stay aware of guest service and safety issues and provide regular and dependable feedback to the senior officer
Stand watch and perform other duties as required

REQUIREMENTS/EDUCATION:

High school diploma or equivalent required
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) with QMED endorsement
STCW 95 Certificate with the following endorsements: III/4 and VI/1
Valid United States Passport
Must be able to acquire and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
Successful completion of in-house IMO-HSC Type Rating Program
Copy of DD Form 214, if Veteran Status
Pass pre-employment background check. Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by the USCG including but not limited to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post-accident/incident testing.
Maintain compliance with USCG licensing requirements including physical standards

EXPERIENCE:

Three (3) years’ as marine engineer, demonstrating ability to handle increasing levels of responsibility
Specific training and experience in management of major onboard systems by type and brand
High Speed passenger vessel experience desired
Water Jet experience preferred
Excellent career record in the marine industry

ABILITIES:

Possess and demonstrate superior engine room skills relevant to the operation of a high-speed diesel powered waterjet propelled car/passenger ferry
Will be required to serve on board high speed transport craft operated at high speeds in rough water and must be physically able and conditioned to endure the rigors of these operations
Communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing and demonstrate well-developed inter-personal skills, to include maintaining quality working relationships with other employees and the public during the course of work
Logically and independently plan, organize, and complete work
Demonstrate initiative and an ability to set and achieve high standards of performance
Be able to pursue and complete multiple assignments under time constraints and in an environment subject to many distractions
Possess and demonstrate superior judgment, analytical ability, performance under pressure and other skills necessary during routine operation or emergency response aboard a high capacity motor vessel Training and experience in the operation of onboard control, communication, lifesaving, navigation and fire-fighting systems
Ability to use independent judgment and discretion to develop and execute innovative solutions to engineering problems
Be able to design and implement training, mentoring, coaching and counseling programs and sessions
Thoroughly understand all pertinent regulations and laws under which the vessel operates

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The majority of work is performed in a Marine environment in outdoor conditions with exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions, along with a moderate to loud noise level.
Present a neat and well-groomed personal appearance commensurate with professional maritime standards
Must wear Company uniform and required safety equipment
The Marine operation is subject to varied wake and motion.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to stand and walk on nearly a constant basis
Ability to bend, rotate and reach frequently
Ability to carry, push/pull and/or lift materials weighing upwards of 75 lbs
Ascending/descending stairs or ladders safely
Ability to manipulate/handle/grip materials required to perform job
Ability to maneuver small and/or confined areas within the vessel including engine room spaces and crew areas
Must be able to maintain both static and dynamic standing balance to complete various duties associated with job
Must be capable of performing emergency duties as listed in the vessel’s station bill
Vision must be correctible to 20/40 with full color vision and no night blindness.

This is foolish. And yet again demonstrates the NS Governments complete ineptitude concerning Marine issues. Think of the Bluenose II. Here we have a Ferry service, completely funded by the NS Government, using a US owned/flagged vessel... hence NO Canadian Seafarer jobs.

Job posting concerning this operation should be banished.
