Job Description:

The Marine Engineer executes repairs and regular maintenance of our seasonally operated fleet of Transport Canada inspected passenger vessels, barges, marine railway, and associated equipment. The engineer completes daily job assignments and duties and reports on the status of work assignments; contributes to the organization and storage of inspection, maintenance, and repair records in both digital and hard copy format. As part of the engineering team, the engineer is responsible for troubleshooting problems as well as designing and implementing solutions. Follows up on jobs and consults with the Marine Operations Manager for directions and support. Reporting to the Marine Operations Manager, essential job functions and duties include but are not limited to the following:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Inspects, maintains, and repairs all aspects of the boats including the structure, mechanical, and electrical systems
Ensures that all boats exceed the minimum Transport Canada, Federal, and Provincial standards
Maintains all equipment to manufacturer’s specifications
Documents inspections, maintenance, and repairs in designated SMS and ISO record and documentation systems
Performs daily vessel servicing as required, including fueling, sewage pump-out, and fresh water filling
Assists with annual commissioning and decommissioning as well as launching and retrieval of boats and barges
Assists with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of propulsion systems including diesel engines, outboard engines, marine transmissions, controls, instrumentation, shafts, bearings, and propellers
Assists with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of both AC and DC electrical systems including generators, motors, wiring, circuit protection, frequency drives, batteries, and electronics
Assists with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems including pumps, piping, valves, black-water systems, grey-water systems, potable water systems, fuel systems, fire systems, bilge systems
Assists with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of hydraulic systems including pumps, motors, hoses, rams, controls
Assists with the inspection, maintenance, and repair of steel and aluminum structures, including bolt torqueing, ultrasonic thickness gauging, cutting, and welding (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW)
Assists in preparation of Transport Canada inspections
Requests purchasing through the Marine Operations Manager as necessary
Keeps all engine spaces wiped down, cleaned, and painted
Keeps all bilges and void spaces clean and clear of both water and debris
Maintains safety equipment in compliance with Federal and Provincial regulations
Fulfills duties as designated in company Safety Management System and RMS system
Advises Marine Operations Manager and/or Manager of ISO/Training of improvements necessary in systems and logs for corrective actions and prevention of risks regarding health & safety, environmental, and/or quality
Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements:

Working knowledge of and interest in marine engineering and/or ship repair
Minimum 2 years of relevant maintenance and repair experience
Minimum 1 year experience in marine environment
Demonstrated knowledge of diesel engines, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
Marine engineering certificate, or other trade certificate a definite asset
WHMIS for workers in Ontario also an asset
Candidates, who, in addition to the above, possess specialized skills such as fitting, welding, equipment operating, will be given strong consideration
The ability to successfully complete a criminal background check
