This role will provide you an exciting and fulfilling opportunity where you will be able to manage all technical aspects of vessel operation. You will also be an integrated part of the Svitzer Americas technical team and therefore be working closely with colleagues outside Canada.

Svitzer Canada is a lean and growing organization currently operating eight tugs spread over four cities. You will have a flexible work routine which will vary between office work and travel activities within the various operations in the country. Further, we also offer some flexibility in determining where the physical location of this role will be based within Eastern Canada.

Key Responsibilities

The Technical Superintendent will be part of a team responsible for providing leadership, supervision and support to the team of engineers on board our fleet in Svitzer Canada. This person will ensure that our tugs are always in good technical state, verifying that our systems and processes already in place are used and running optimally, which will enable us to provide reliable service to our customers.

Main tasks will include:

Conduct regular monthly visits to the different tugs across the operations to provide support and supervision on technical related aspects.
Provide support and supervision on the technical status.
Supervise and verify daily that Svitzer maintenance and procurement programs are utilized correctly and kept up to date.
Coordinate contact with suppliers and verify that the technical procurement process is completed in a cost effective manner.
Verify that maintenance is done as programmed.
Oversee the budget and expenditure of the technical aspects within the operations and provide regular status reports to management.

Who we are looking for

We are seeking an ambitious person who has a strong technical maritime background. The ideal candidate is a determined person who is eager to get things done quickly but in an effective manner with strong attention to details, appreciation for systems and with good abilities to follow up. You must be a self-starter, and able to work alone, yet function in a team environment. Strong analytical mind-set is critical for this position and must be able to make a plan and execute it.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Technical or engineering background, either from shore or maritime, preferably with more than 10 years of experience
Excellent oral and written English. French language skills is a plus.
High proficiency with Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
Experience with computer based vessel maintenance programs is a plus
Time management skills
Good communication skills across multiple levels in the organization and with external and internal stakeholders.
Flexibility to travel (50-60%) a must for this role.

Look's like Svitzer is getting pretty aggressive in establishing itself in Quebec, here's an advertising billboard, spotted on the main road to Group Ocean headquarters in Quebec City.

Group Ocean is the well-known and dominate tug operator in the area, especially in Montreal and Quebec.
