Opportunities for Students
Robert Allan Ltd - Vancouver, BC
We are looking for Canada's best students of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering who are looking for a serious work term experience, and in-depth exposure to the business of designing real ships. If this is you… please read on and apply soon!

For more than 20 years Robert Allan Ltd. has maintained a permanent student work-term / intern position within our office. This position is offered on a rotating basis to one, or often two Canadian students of Naval Architecture or Mechanical Engineering. The position involves working in Canada's most active consulting design office environment, on a variety of real design projects for a worldwide client base. The student will be an active participant in a project design team, and will be expected to undertake design and engineering tasks commensurate with their skill levels. Deadlines will be assigned and must be met, however we also recognize that this is a learning experience for the student and full guidance is provided, as well as the opportunity to develop one of the assigned tasks into a work term project report.

Typical design projects in this office include tugboats, escort tugs, fireboats, research vessels, ferries, crewboats, barges and patrol craft; in short harbour and coastal working craft of all types. Examples of typical vessels designed by the company can be seen on our website.

Preference for these positions is given to senior students enrolled in a co-operative education program in Canada who aspire to a career in the marine industry and who have ideally completed at least 2 years of a 4 year degree course. Work Term positions are typically for four months.

The successful candidate for a work term position at Robert Allan Ltd. must have:

A serious objective to pursue a career in the marine field
A high academic standard
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Good skill level in use of AutoCAD
Preferably familiar with lines fairing and stability software
Ideally previous experience in some aspect of ship design, shipbuilding, or vessel operations

Students are invited to apply for this position no later than the date set by the University for work term applications. Applications should include:

Letter of application for the position
Latest transcript of academic performance
Two references for academic or work experience
