Description

The Assistant Barge Mechanical Superintendent is responsible for ensuring the mechanical readiness, safety of, and suitability for intended trade of Seaspan and Marine Petrobulk barges vessels with mechanical systems. This includes implementing and monitoring the maintenance and repair strategies for the preservation of the existing fleet, aiding in the development of improvements and modifications of existing equipment and new equipment to meet changing customer requirements

The Assistant Barge Mechanical Superintendent reports directly to the Barge Maintenance Superintendent. Peers include the Assistant Barge Maintenance Superintendents, Engineering department Shore Engineers and the Log Barge Maintenance Supervisors.
Duties/Accountabilities

Repair & Maintenance of Vessels

Responsible for the regular mechanical and operation maintenance of assigned barges and machinery on other barges in the Seaspan fleet, this includes the three Marine Petrobulk barges.
Implements and executes the planned maintenance and occasional unplanned repair of both regulated and non-regulated vessels.
Conducts and/or arranges for barge surveys, develops detailed repair specifications from the surveys, coordinates quotations based on repair specifications with the shipyards (both within and outside of the WMG), and providing owners representation during repairs to ensure the repair work is completed satisfactorily.
Maintains the required internal and external reports and maintenance records for the assigned vessels.

Regulatory Compliance

Conducts and/or arranges for the required surveys, test and inspections of equipment. Acts as the point of contact for classification societies, government authorities, and other bodies who audit or certify our equipment and make regular inspections aboard company vessels.

Education and Experience

A minimum of 10 years’ experience in service and maintenance of shipboard machinery and systems, in operation and a practical/hands-on capacity
Certification as a Marine engineer, diesel mechanic or millwright, experience and knowledge of marine electrical, piping and hydraulic systems
A SOTO or SCTO and several years’ experience as an operating bargeman would be an asset.
Experience working with Transport Canada, classification societies, and third party safety and condition inspectors.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including strong abilities to address a diverse audience and excellent technical writing skills
An effective team player who works well with employees at all levels and across disciplines
Supervisory skills and/or experience is desirable
Knowledge of the BC marine, and specifically tug and barge industry, is a definite asset
Good computer skills, including knowledge of MS Word and Excel, experience with planned maintenance system like NS5 will be an asset.
Physical strengths and mobility as required to conduct vessel surveys and inspections
