DP World Prince Rupert Inc. operates the Fairview Container Terminal. It is strategically located on the great circle route from Asia and is North America’s deepest natural harbour. Specifically designed as a high volume Intermodal container transfer facility, containers are rapidly moved between vessel and rail thereby further enhancing DP World Prince Rupert’s total transit time advantage.

Role Purpose

The Maintenance Superintendent will work in the Fairview facility, alongside 3 other superintendents and will report to the Manager of Engineering and Maintenance. In this role the incumbent will direct all maintenance mechanics through the Foremen/Supervisors. The Superintendent will ensure the highest quality equipment maintenance, repair and technical services, while being a constant advocate of a safe working environment; promoting team-work to drive both operational effectiveness and process improvement.

Key Accountabilities

Structuring, participating and leading the daily maintenance activities to maximize the efficient utilization of manpower, equipment and resources.

Supervising a unionized labor force of Maintenance Foremen, hiring daily labour, and determining resource requirements.

Working closely with Operations Superintendents to ensure the safe, reliable and cost effective operation of all equipment and assets.

Implementing and managing standard maintenance procedures. Reviewing performance against maintenance plans and engineering standards.

> Consistently attaining and/or exceeding equipment performance targets.

Structuring tasks and goals, establishing efficient action plans to meet goals and KPI’s, setting priorities, and organizing information efficiently to effectively execute tasks.

Creating and managing budgetary guidelines and controls.

Ensuring safe working practices are adhered to; promoting safety in all aspects of the maintenance process.

Managing, motivating, coaching and instructing subordinates.

Providing regular process control checks, initiating and supporting performance improvement activities.

Setting and maintaining performance criteria.

Maintaining and enhancing relationships with other departments and labour force.

Managing sub-contractor companies and personnel when required.

Developing and implementing Safety and Environment Program documentation and training.

Participating in safety programs and attend Safety Committee meetings.

Ensuring that Foremen under your direction are following and enforcing site safety rules, programs, and procedures.

Communicating maintenance plans and schedules to terminal staff and working with operational requirements.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

The successful candidate will possess:
Post-secondary degree or diploma in Electrical, Mechanical, Structural or Electrical Engineering technology, or similar experience.

A minimum of five years’ experience managing a maintenance department and its staff.

Possess proven troubleshooting skills on power and control circuits.

Thorough knowledge of maintaining and troubleshooting large variable frequency drives, PLC’s and industrial drive systems.

Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of medium and low voltage power systems.

S trong maintenance (electrical and or mechanical) background, with experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of gear reducers, brakes, winches and hydraulic systems.

Thorough knowledge of modern reliability and maintenance best practices, including IT-based maintenance systems.

Proven ability to understand structural, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic drawings and schematics.

Advanced computer skills, including MS Office, computerized maintenance management systems and industrial control software.

Proven ability as a strong leader with excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills.

Must have exceptional time management, organizational and planning skills, with a strong attention to detail.

Outstanding report writing and analytical skills.

A flexible team player who is able to work as required and willing to adapt to change.

Ability to leverage employee knowledge to develop solutions and sharing relevant learnings with others.

Experience working within unionized environments.

Ability to obtain Transport Canada Security clearance.

Available to be on call as required.

Holding a Class-A Unrestricted Contractors License would be considered an asset.
