Reporting to the Manager, Canal Services, the Ship Inspector ensures customer compliance to the rules and regulations governing the St. Lawrence Seaway system by performing vessel inspections as required.
Responsibilities
Inspect vessels to ensure customer compliance to the rules and regulations governing the St. Lawrence Seaway system;
Conduct inspection, analysis and report information pertaining to accidents, incidents and violations;
Provide subject matter expertise to various SLSMC departments as required;
Liaise and coordinate with various external stakeholders (such as: Owners, Agents, Masters, Classification Surveyors and Underwriters, Pilotage, Transport Canada-Marine Safety and other Government Agencies), as required;
Monitor and report on vessel safety, security and compliance data;
Perform enforcement duties as a designated “Enforcement Officer” under Canada Marine Act.
Additional Skills
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in both official languages(QC).
Proficiency in applicable computer programs and related office software
Experience and knowledge
Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in Operations;
Comprehensive knowledge of marine legislation, practices, regulations and the operation and specifications of various vessel types;
Specific knowledge of marine surveying, inspections and accident investigation.
Education
High School Diploma
Certifications
Certificate of competency as Master Mariner valid for Canadian ship
Enforcement Officer Qualification
Valid Class G (ON) or Class 5 (QC) driver's license and insurable driving record
Conditions of Employment
37.5 hrs schedule
Ability to meet physical demands and safety sensitive requirements
Ability to meet the applicable security clearance from Transport Canada
Testing/Assessments
Linguistic Testing (Second Language)
Psychometric Assessment
