Chief Engineer, High Speed Craft (Vancouver)

Job Summary: The Chief Engineer is designated by the Company as the senior engineering officer of each vessel. The Chief Engineer is responsible for the management of shipboard engineering systems and equipment, the day to day activities of the engineering crew, and is responsible for representing, enforcing, and preserving Company interests, policies and procedures to the crew and sub-contractors.

Key Responsibilities:

The Chief Engineer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Responsible for implementing the safety and environmental protection policies of the Company; motivating the crew in the observation of those policies; issuing and communicating appropriate orders and instructions in a clear and simple manner; verifying that specified requirements of the SMS, Code of Conduct, and Company policies are observed.
Ensure the safe operation of the vessel and to provide a link between the Company and those on board, the Company has designated a person or persons ashore having direct access to the highest level of management. The Chief Engineer (and all crew members) has been provided contact information for Clipper’s Designated Person. The Chief Engineer has the responsibility to monitor the safety and pollution-prevention aspects of the operation of the vessel and to ensure that adequate resources and shore-based support are applied, as required. Any deficiencies must be immediately reported to the Master and Company Designated Person.
As directed by the Master, the Chief Engineer has the authority under his/her licensure to perform responsibilities aboard their vessel or when otherwise engaged in the business of the Company in the capacity of a Chief Engineer in a manner consistent with this job description.
As directed by the Master, the Chief Engineer serves as the OICEW and is responsible for the management and direction of other OICEWs to ensure the safe operation and efficient maintenance of the vessels engineering systems in compliance with the applicable laws and regulations of the vessel’s flag state, coastal state, and the Company SMS in a manner consistent with maintaining the safety of the crew and the protection of the environment.
Manages the engineering officers, engineering crew, vendors and subcontractors as directed by the Master, including service delivery, safety management, human resource management, and cost management in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Company.
Manage the engineering officers and engineering crew aboard his/her vessel under the direction of the Master
Cooperate and work closely with flag state, port state and regulatory agencies such as “BV” Bureau Veritas, Transport Canada, Port Engineer and Operations Coordinator as well as any other relevant personnel necessary for the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of the vessels engineering systems as directed by the Master.

Qualifications and Skills Required:
All certifications of competency, licenses and experience required by law for a Chief Engineer as determined by Transport Canada or any other Canadian regulatory body. Current medical certificate from an authorized marine medical examiner as required under the Canada Shipping Act, 2001 and regulations thereunder confirming fitness for sea service.
Possess all valid flag state (and coastal state as applicable) credentials required by law for service as Chief Engineer on the route and class of vessel appointed to (examples: Merchant Mariners Credential, Medical Certificate, etc.).
A valid Driver’s License.
A valid Passport.
Marine Advanced First Aid.
Ability to read and write English as well as render, understand and react to commands given in English.
5 years’ experience as a Chief Engineer in the similar vessels.
Strong analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting skills.

Education Required:
Successful completion of Grade 12 is required.

Other Information and Requirements
Clipper is establishing a year-round passenger ferry service between Vancouver Harbour and Victoria Harbour.
It is anticipated that the operating schedule will require that successful applicants for this position will work a split shift involving 12 hours work with a 3 hour rest period in Victoria between shifts. Clipper will provide a rest location. The vessel will return to Vancouver each evening.

The weekly hours of work will likely vary between 36 and no more than 48 hours per week. It is likely that Clipper will seek approval of an hours of work averaging agreement compliant with the Canada Labour Code.

Salary: Commensurate with experience
