Description

The Shore Mechanic has primary accountability in coordinating, overseeing and performing ongoing maintenance and repairs on Seaspan owned and operated vessels (tugs and barges), ensuring that these vessels are properly maintained and are in seaworthy condition. In addition, this role assists with the management of the daily operations of the facility, including the dockday operations and the management of the facility where they work.

This position reports directly to the Maintenance Shop Foreman. Peers include the Assistant Barge Maintenance Superintendents and the Log Barge Maintenance Supervisors within the M&R division.
Duties/Accountabilities

Facility Operations

Assists with the management of the daily operations at the facility, which involves the organization, scheduling (vessels, people, and resources) and monitoring of dock day operations as well as the management of the facility. Ensures proper organization and effective implementation of the service schedules causing as little down time as possible on the vessels.
Issues hot work permits. Supervises repairs done by the hourly Shipyard employees to ensure quality and that any signs of problems are detected early on. Conducts ship inspections and ensures that the Captains understand the conditions of the vessel from a safety perspective. Also issue lock out tag out permits and sign off confined space entry permits and oversee confined space work
Assists with the procurement of resources and equipment necessary to keep the daily operations of the facility running smoothly and efficiently.
Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with the company’s safe work procedures, standard operating procedures, and all applicable rules and regulations are adhered.
Provides relief for the Maintenance Shop Foreman and assumes facility operational responsibilities during his/her absence.

Off-site Repairs

Responds to troubleshooting requests from Dispatch. Understands and provides initial diagnosis to the problem via phone communications. Based on the nature and the severity of the problem, determines the priority and the most practical and/or suitable solution to remedy the problem, weighing in the effects on crew safety and possibility of further equipment damage.
Travels to the vessel and/or arranges an on-call repairperson to inspect and repair the problem. Assists the Captain in understanding mechanical aspect of the vessel.
For more critical circumstances, coordinates the vessels to a suitable tie up, organizes a third party to tow the vessel to the nearest docking facility, or brings the vessel back to the facility for repair once it finishes the scheduled work.
Orchestrates the returning and the docking of the vessels with Dispatch and the Vancouver Shipyards when on-site repair is required. Conducts inspections and determines repair solutions including scope, method, budget and timing of repair. Acts as the charge-hand, supervises contractors in specialized trades, and oversees the repair work done at the Shipyards.
maintains an on-call rotation for running repairs on vessels outside of the regular work schedule.
Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Completion of Grade 12 education plus post-secondary courses in management and leadership skills
A minimum of 5 years hands-on mechanical and shipboard engineering experience including shore based ship maintenance and repair experience. Experience working as an onboard Engineer is an asset
4th Class Engineering Certificate or Mechanics trade certification (Red Seal Certification Heavy Duty Mechanic or Millwright) preferred
Experience supervising vessel maintenance and repairs
A valid class 5 driver's licence is required
Must be available for on-call shifts (mainly evenings and weekends)

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

Excellent engineering, mechanical, steel working and electrical tradesman skills. Knowledge of welding is an asset, Hydraulic experience would be an asset
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
Knowledge of marine emergency procedures and other applicable regulations
Understanding of union contracts and their terms and conditions
Computer proficiency in Microsoft office programs is an asset, Maintenance Management Software experience.
