Port Engineer, Electrical and Automation
Seaspan ULC - Delta, BC

The Port Engineer, Electrical and Automation has the primary accountability for the maintenance and repair of the electrical and automation aspect of Seaspan Ferries’ vessels including the LNG/Hybrid-electric vessels (installed power of 8.6MW per vessel). Daily work of the Port Engineer, Electrical and Automation will involve responding to and diagnosing engineering problems on board vessels, providing and implementing repair recommendations, overseeing the planned maintenance program, coordinating and initiating work orders for vessel refits, and providing guidance and mentorship for the shipboard engineers.

The Port Engineer, Electrical and Automation, reports directly to the Maintenance & Engineering Superintendent. Although this role does not have any direct reports, this role directs and acts as a resource for the shipboard Engineers regarding routine maintenance, repairs and operation of the vessels.

Duties/Accountabilities Vessel Repair

Responds to electrical issues reported by the vessel crew or the on-board engineer, determines the accuracy of the report and assesses if repairs can be conducted while the vessel is in service.
If the nature of the repair requires the vessel to be removed from service, establishes the estimated down time from internal and external sources) and liaises a workable schedule with the customer service department.
Provides a scope of work (or work order) detailing all the repair work that needs to happen in scheduled out of service/dry dock periods.
If purchasing of new equipment is required, sources options and obtains quotes then initiates a Purchase Order for the item. Coordinates approvals and follows up with Purchasing to ensure an efficient delivery schedule.
If the repair involves a significant cost that is outside of the repair budget, obtains quotes and prepares rationale for management consideration before initiating the work.
Oversees the electrical repair work to ensure that work is completed in a timely and quality manner.
If sub-contractors are involved, oversees work and signs off invoices.
Assists other Port Engineer with mechanical repairs/faults as required.

Planned Maintenance Program

Checks in with the shipboard engineers and monitors the log sheet to ensure daily routine electrical maintenance is performed on the vessel.
Ensures that maintenance and repair records for each vessel are kept.

Refit

Completes examination and overhaul of electrical equipment required every 5 years.
Coordinates and prepares work scope for electrical vessels prior to out of service and docking periods.

Guidance & Mentorship

Provide training on electrical/automation systems for Vessel crew.
Acts as a resource for the shipboard engineers and provides input regarding training and apprenticeship programs.
Works with Marine Personnel and Engineering Superintendent on the advancement (mentoring, training, assessment) of junior engineers.

New Construction

Provides technical consultative input to new construction projects, which includes proposing suitable equipment for the vessel based on cost-benefit analysis and offering design input (machinery space arrangement) based on functionality, efficiency and safety considerations (e.g. access to equipment for maintenance, line of sights, layout, etc.).

Education and Experience

Diploma or Degree in electrical engineering, automation, robotics technology or equivalent.
Industrial electricians with sufficient training and experience shall also be considered
Ship’s Electrical Officers (valid Canadian Certificate not required) with sufficient training and experience shall also be considered
4+ years’ experience with troubleshooting and debugging and repairing of industrial electro-mechanical components and equipment
Experience with electrical generation and distribution systems
Experience working in a marine environment is an asset
Possess mechanical experience in assembling and disassembling components
Experience with AC/DC switchboards, grid converters and propulsion inverters is an asset

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

A strong electrical background with extra training in electronic control system and PLC protocols
Knowledge of vessels and vessel propulsion systems including generator and motor knowledge/maintenance and repair experience.
Must be willing to assist other team members with mechanical repairs
Exceptional communication (written & verbal) and interpersonal skills
Ability to work under tight deadlines
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, ability to dissect a problem and form solutions that meet real-time constraints
Demonstrated ability in diagnosing electrical and mechanical failures
Capability of modifying and/or changing mechanical parts as required
Team player with a positive mind-set and ability to adapt/work independently in a challenging environment
Resourceful; eager to learn from others
Must be able to prioritize, multi-task and make sound engineering decisions
Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
