Manager, Marine Engineer

Description

The Manager, Marine Engineering is a seasoned leader that will manage and lead their marine engineering team. They are responsible for the maintenance and appearance of all vessels in a manner that enhances the experience for the guests. The Manager is responsible for overseeing, assigning daily projects and routine maintenance to the engineering crew. The Manager will also be responsible for leadership, performance management and administrative duties. This position reports to the Director, Marine Operations. Essential job functions and duties include but are not limited to the following:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

manage and lead the Marine engineering crew, including Engineers, Engine Room Ratings and Engineering Assistants
create and manage crew schedules; approve time off, sick time and all other requests
work with the Manager, Marine Operations to ensure all vessels exceed the minimum standards for Transport Canada as well as all other federal, provincial and contractual requirements
responsible for performance management, including coaching, counseling, developing and engagement of crew
plan and monitor all daily engineering operations while working closely with all other Operations Managers
together with the Manager, Marine Operations lead projects during new vessel builds, equipment upgrades, vessel maintenance and repairs including haul outs, refits and equipment overhauls
manage, prepare and oversee all purchasing, engineering operating/capital budget and strategic plan
ensure ongoing cost analysis and containment in responsible areas
reviews work requests, and compare them with previous work completed on vessels in order to ensure that costs are economically sound
prepares technical reports for use by engineering, marine operations and upper management
monitor and ensure compliance with all provincial, federal and industry specific legislation and company standards set for all project and daily operations
manage and develop external relationships including all authorities, regulators, local stakeholders, contractors, suppliers, and consultants
maintain industry knowledge of best practices, new technologies, and systems to improve the quality of guest experience and employee performance
develop new and innovative ways to enhance safety and operational efficiency
ensure the logging and documentation of inspections as set forth in the SMS and ISO Management Systems is completed, remain current with inspections and documentation for internal and third party audits
recommend, plan and execute projects as directed by the Director, Marine Operations
acts as a liaison between Captain and Engineers in order to ensure that schedules and budgets are maintained, and that vessels are operated safely and efficiently
work with the Manager, Marine Operations and other department Managers to share information, ideas and strategies for continuous improvements
schedule machine overhauls and the servicing of electrical, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, water and sewage systems
assist with the recruitment, placement and on-boarding of engineering crew
provide Engineers with the tools, documentation and schedules to deliver training, drills and safety talks to meet the regulatory, legislative and required contractual obligations
hold Engineers accountable for conducting and recording training drills, checklists and safety talks
together with HR, ensure that all training and required certifications for the Engineering department are up to date
review and recommend updates to the departmental policies, procedures and plans
develop and maintain the company vessel security plan in accordance with regulatory and contractual requirements
develop and maintain the company safety management system in accordance with regulatory and contractual requirements

Qualifications:

ten or more years of progressively responsible experience in a marine operation, preferably within the hospitality industry
minimum of five years managing and leading employees
post-secondary education at an accredited maritime college or other institution preferred
4th Class or higher Marine Engineering certificate
PCOC, SVOP, or Limited Master Certificate (training provided)
current Marine Advanced First Aid
current (within previous two (2) years) Transport Canada approved medical
strong leadership, customer service, organizational and planning skills
excellent interpersonal & communication skills (written, oral and listening) including conflict resolution skills
demonstrated knowledge of diesel engines, mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems
possess and maintain a current Ontario drivers license and satisfactory driving record
Confined Space training an asset
Fall Arrest training an asset
knowledge of shipboard maintenance software and Microsoft office applications an asset
