$150,000 - $170,000 a year - Full-time, Permanent

Algoma a leading Canadian shipping company, owning and operating the largest fleet of dry and liquid bulk carriers operating on the Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Waterway has an opening for an AVP – Marine Operations & Fleet Personnel (NOC 0016).

The AVP - Marine Operations & Fleet Personnel provides leadership and oversight to workforce planning, labour and employee relations, and supports marine operations. The successful incumbent will lead a team with duties that include, but are not limited to:

Workforce Planning (Shipboard employees) - Officer, crew, and cadet recruitment. Company representatives at academies, schools, and labour unions on hiring issues. Develop training programs for shipboard personnel. Maintain a tracking system of all certificates, licenses, pilotage, and requisite trainings to ensure crews meet regulatory and company requirements. Develops a coherent talent management system. Manage Marine Personnel including crew travel, vessel manning, par levels, and succession planning. Co-ordinate the work of regions, divisions or departments. Represent the company or delegate representatives to act on behalf of the company, in negotiations or other official functions.
Labour & Employee Relations (Shipboard Employees) - Contract negotiation, administration, arbitration, grievances, and labour strategy. Crew engagement & welfare, performance management, counseling, mediation, and corrective action. Works closely with and advises corporate Human Resources. Select middle managers and directors. Establish objectives for the company and formulate or approve policies and programs. Authorize and organize the establishment of major departments and associated senior staff.
Marine Operations - Supports Deck & Engineering Superintendents as business partner. Proactively works to improve efficiencies of shipboard operations. Assists with shipboard galley, ensuring a consistently high standard is maintained onboard whilst controlling costs. Assists with purchasing of employee travel services and other contracted services as required.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree is required, preferably in labour relations or human resources.
A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in the marine industry is required.
Experience working aboard ship and in a corporate (office) setting required.
Strong knowledge of the Great Lakes & St. Lawrence Seaway marine industry required
A minimum of 7-10 years of experience in labour relations, workforce planning, and human resources with demonstrated increases in responsibility and authority up to a senior management level.
Mate, Engineer and/or Master’s license is required.
Logistics and dispatch experience is an asset (marine traffic or equivalent), as well as marine personnel and crew travel experience.
International business experience, particularly in the marine industry, is an asset.
Comfortable with matrix reporting and cross-departmental partnerships to achieve results.
Strong administrative, organization and project management skills are a must.

Additional Details:

Hours of work: 40 hours per week, with frequent travel and a requirement for work after regular business hours as needed in order to fulfil employment responsibilities.

Location of work: St Catharines, Ontario, Canada

Compensation: Vacation allowance, medical, dental, life and disability insurance and defined contribution pension. An annual salary of $150,000-170,000 and eligible for monthly car allowance, bonuses and/or salary increases in accordance with company policy.
