Fraser River Pile & Dredge (GP) Inc. (FRPD) is Canada's largest Marine & Infrastructure, Land Foundations and Dredging contractor. The company is privately owned with operations mainly in Western Canada and the Northwest Territories, and FRPD is a growing award winning company. This is a unionized position for our Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger FRPD 309.


The responsibilities of the dual role of Watchkeeping/Duty Engineer include but are not limited to:

Following the Chief Engineer's Standing orders
Maintaining propulsion and power generation systems within safe operating parameters
Monitoring and maintaining mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, control equipment and dredging systems
Monitoring, maintaining and recording fuel levels of the day tank and settling tank
Monitoring, maintaining and recording levels in dirty water tanks, sludge tanks and main engine sump tanks
Performing routine check on machineries (oil/water level, temperatures and pressure)
Draining water from starting air bottles and air systems
Draining water/sludge accumulated on F.O. daily tanks
Documenting and reporting incidents, repairs, failures, use of spare parts and special activities
Taking over running watch duties
Performing repairs and tasks as directed by the Chief Engineer
Executing and supervising tasks as ordered by the Chief Engineer

Trained and familiarized Engineers are authorized to work independently during their watch in the engine room. The Watchkeeping Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer. The Duty Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer and/or the Watchkeeping Engineer.

Key Responsibilities:

Ensure that all officers under the Watchkeeping Engineer keep him/her fully advised at all times on matters relating to ship and machinery condition, crew safety, and all potential hazards and risks
Keep the Chief Engineer appraised of issues that could affect the safe operation of the ship and the safety of its crew
Alert the Chief Engineer when any situation occurs that would risk the ship, crew or environment

Required Skills & Qualifications:

Certificate of Competency

* Minimum - Transport Canada Fourth-Class Engineer, Motor Ship (or equivalent),

STCW 95 Regulation - III/1

Marine Medical Certificate, Transport Canada (or equivalent, note: to be issued by the same country as national CoC)
Certificate(s) of Proficiency in Basic Safety Training, STCW 95 Regulation - VI/1

* Personal Survival Techniques, STCW 95 Regulation - VI/1-1,

* Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting, STCW 95 Regulation - VI/1-2,

* Elementary (Marine Basic) First Aid, STCW 95 Regulation - VI/1-3,

* Personal Safety and Social Responsibility, STCW 95 Regulation - VI/1-4

Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats, STCW 95 Regulation - VI/1-2

Working Conditions:

The three week rotation will typically be two weeks on and one week off
Shift is 12 hours on/off a day with overtime as required
Unionized position
