Duties

In 2016 Parks Canada’s Archaeology and History Branch acquired the 29-m, 228-ton Research Vessel (R/V) David Thompson (ex CCGS Arrow Post) from the Canadian Coast Guard. This ship will serve a wide range of oceanographic research objectives throughout Canadian waters beginning in the summer of 2018. It will be used for years to come by Parks Canada to fulfill its mandate on the protection and presentation of Canada’s nationally significant natural and cultural heritage places. Most relevant to the ship’s activities are those situated in National Marine Conservation Areas, National Historic Sites and National Parks along Canada’s Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic coasts, and in major rivers and the Great Lakes. The RV David Thompson Chief Engineer will be a key Parks Canada team member to support not only the operation of the ship but also Parks Canada’s wider mandate.

Initially and for the next several years the ship will be used principally to support archaeological research being conducted at the Wrecks of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror National Historic Site in Nunavut. Indeed, the first voyage of the RV David Thompson will be a transit of the Northwest Passage, starting in Sidney, British Columbia and ending at a St. Lawrence River port. For work at the wreck of HMS Erebus the RV David Thompson will tow and operate in conjunction with Parks Canada’s un-propelled archaeological excavation and diving support barge named Qiniqtiryuaq, which supports three containers for: a lab; storage and equipment space; and hyperbaric recompression chamber.

The RV David Thompson just completed a substantial midlife refit and was entered into class (ABS). Many new improvements to the ship have been undertaken or are in progress. The ship’s particulars are as follows: launched 1992; steel hull; length 29 m; breadth 8.8 m; Gross tonnage 228; maximum speed 13 knots; berths 14; main engine 954 kW; generators 2 at 92 kW; single propeller; fuel capacity 52,600 L; freshwater 22,500 L; and endurance 28 days. The ship will be equipped with a range of state-of-the-art archaeological and oceanographic survey equipment, including: multi-beam echosounder, side-scan sonar, remotely operated vehicles, an autonomous underwater vehicle, and will be equipped to deploy scientific diving teams.
