Context

The Department of Transportation and Works is responsible for the administration, supervision, control, regulation, management and direction of all matters relating to transportation and public works. As such, the department oversees the construction and maintenance of the provincial highways; the provision of the provincial ferry services; management of the provincial government fleet of light vehicles and heavy equipment; operation and maintenance of the provincial government air ambulances and water bombers; and construction and management of provincial government buildings. The vision of the Department of Transportation and Works is of safe, reliable and sustainable transportation and public works infrastructure and services, demonstrating a commitment to service excellence in supporting the social and economic needs of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Duties

Responsible for the mechanical operation and maintenance of the engine room and its auxiliaries, the successful candidate is required to act as engineer in charge of the engine room and auxiliaries by supervising and participating in activating, operating and controlling the main engines; inspect, clean and perform electronic, plumbing, troubleshoot and perform mechanical and hydraulic repairs as well as perform maintenance in accordance with departmental preventative maintenance schedules; ensures that back-up systems are in operational order; accompany the vessel as required during refit schedules and assists technical personnel (where required) in carrying out repairs and alterations; maintain an adequate level of supplies and routine parts; assist with operation of portable wharf lighting operation and vessel shore based genset operation and maintenance; other related duties as required.

Screening Criteria

Experience in marine engineering and the operation of marine diesel, hydraulic and electrical equipment in a Canadian environment.
Valid 3rd Class Motor Engineer’s Certificate issued by Transport Canada.
Valid Marine Medical Certificate.
Passenger Safety Management Course and Specialized Passenger Safety Management Course (asset).

Proof of Valid 3rd Class Motor Engineer’s Certificate issued by Transport Canada and Valid Marine Medical Certificate.
Certificate of Conduct satisfactory to the Employer.
Vulnerable Sector Query satisfactory to the Employer.


Conditions of Acceptance

Applicants are advised that positions will be of variable duration and terminate on or before March 31, 2019, subject to possibility of extension.
These positions are short term, casual call-in.
Participation in any safety course training, as offered and required by the Department.
