Job Summary

The Second Engineer duties are best summed as assisting the Chief Engineer maintain the uninterrupted operation of shipboard equipment and systems. This includes helping the Chief Engineer design and manage the implementation of preventive maintenance projects and procedures. Broader duties include relieving the Chief Engineer while the Chief Engineer is off-duty, ordering supplies for engineering and maintenance, assisting with and complying with all company and regulatory safety policies, and other duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer..

Job Type / Category

Our articulated tugs and barges are in operation along the Great Lakes and St Lawrence seaway with year-round operations. On-board scheduling operates on a six-hours on, six-hours off basis. This is a permanent contract with near-immediate availability for training and ship-board familiarization. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply.

Required Education, Skills and Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Fourth-class Engineer License (Motor STCW III/1), Marine Emergency Duties certification inclusive of proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats, advanced firefighting, and MED for senior officers; Marine Advanced First Aid; valid passport; valid Transport Canada medical certificate. The selected candidate must also have the ability to enter the United States, as well as knowledge of ISM and safety management systems; Ship Personnel with Designated Security Duties license.

Preferred Qualifications: Second-Class Engineer License (Motor III/2); Supervision of an Oil Transfer Operation (SOTO) or Specialised Oil Tanker Training; Ship Security Officer (SSO) certification; knowledge of oil trade and the practices of marine oil terminals; Proficiency with Microsoft word and Excel as well as other computer and data entry software will be considered serious assets. Personal characteristics of an ideal candidate include being able to work well with others, delegate authority, strong leadership skills as well as exhibiting conscientious and trustworthy behaviour. A good sense of humour will also be an asset.

Only applicants with TRANSPORT CANADA certification will be considered for the position.
