Job Description

Job Opportunity: The Marine Engineering Officer is a permanent, full-time position (40 hours/week) reporting to the Captain of the vessel and its owner, or their designate. The successful candidate will be based at 1088 Marinaside Crescent, Vancouver, BC, V6Z 3C4 (the home moorage), aboard an ocean-going non-commercial yacht, and will be required to work aboard the vessel and wherever it sails and docks. The commencement date is as soon as possible.

Summary Description: The Marine Engineering Officer operates and maintains highly sophisticated propulsion, mechanical and power generation systems and control systems. The successful candidate will provide maintenance using logical diagnostic techniques, provide project management and accurate reporting of progress and costs. Candidates without a Canadian work permit will be considered.

Job duties and key result areas
· Operate and fix propulsion gas turbine and diesel engines and associated systems, including gearing and shafting;
· Operate and fix generators and power distribution systems, including casualty power;
· Operate and fix hydraulic equipment and systems;
· Operate and fix electronic machinery control systems;
· Operate and fix fitted and portable damage control and firefighting equipment;
· Operate and fix refrigeration, air conditioning and ventilation equipment;
· Operate and fix fuel and other liquid management systems;
· Prepare technical specifications, assessments and tender documents for marine work packages;
· Manage project scope, schedule and budget of installation, upgrades and repairs;
· On call 24/7 for emergencies and health and safety issues; and
· Strong quality management orientation.

Skills requirements for the job

Education:
· Completion of secondary school is required
· Post-secondary education (college or equivalent) in mechanics or engineering is an asset
· Marine-related courses are an asset

Qualifications, Skill Requirements and Work Experience
· Minimum of 5 years of maintaining, diagnosing/troubleshooting and repairing various mechanical devices and engines, including marine devices/engines
· Minimum of 5 years working in a large team environment
· Strong interpersonal skills and a positive, collaborative approach
· Fluent in English with excellent written and oral communication
· Familiarity with marine design codes and standards
· Familiarity with Transport Canada and US Coast Guard marine codes and requirements
· Strong familiarity with IMO safety of life at sea (SOLAS) codes
· Proven track record of health and safety management and operating in a safety sensitive environment
· Marine First Aid certification and experience

Wage: CAD$75,500 - $90,000 annually

Benefits: MSP and Extended Health Benefits after three months of employment; 15 paid vacation days; RRSP program eligible after 3 years’ employment.

Other: Three-month probation period
