Position: Engineer for MV Cascadia
Summary
Look after B.C.’s newest expedition cruise vessel while exploring the spectacular B.C. coast as a member of an award-winning ecotourism company.

Our Company
Maple Leaf Adventures is a respected marine ecotourism company that operates small ship cruises to world-class wilderness destinations along the coasts of British Columbia and Alaska, focused on natural and cultural history.

Our Vessels allow guests to explore the wild spaces of our world in luxury and comfort:
• SV Maple Leaf: 92-foot schooner that accommodates up to 8 guests;
• MV Swell: 88-foot tug converted to a passenger vessel for 12 guests; and
• MV Cascadia: 138-foot expedition-style catamaran that accommodates up to 24 guests.

Description of Work Periods for MLA Operations
• Expedition Season: Typically from April to October (primarily based on two rotating crews)
• Winter Maintenance: Typically from November to March
• Shipyard: Annually between February to March

Our Ideal Candidate
The Engineer aboard MV Cascadia is primarily responsible for the mechanical and electrical systems onboard the vessel, including powering and key functions such as steering, anchoring, cargo handling, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, communication systems and other related equipment. The engineer would support the Captain and provide a leadership presence for guests throughout each expedition. Maple Leaf Adventures is looking for Engineers to join our crew (based on a day for day time on/time off rotation) aboard MV Cascadia as it sails into the expedition season for 2019 and beyond. In addition to experience as an Engineer on equivalent-sized vessels, the ideal qualities for our Engineers include:
• Supporting the Captain who is leading a crew of very competent mariners, directing, inspecting and coordinating maintenance;
• Being comfortable maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing vessel systems and equipment in remote locations
• Having the ability to work at sea for extended periods in a variety of weather conditions and sea states;
• Being flexible and organized with proven ability to anticipate the needs of the operations;
• Having strong interpersonal skills to establish respectful relationships with guests; and
• Having a personal interest in the nature of the B.C. coast.

Duties:
Reporting to the Captain, the Engineer aboard Cascadia will be responsible for the preparation and readiness of all mechanical and electrical systems throughout the expedition season. As directed by the Captain, the Engineer will support the overall operations aboard MV Cascadia during each expedition, which includes:
• Ensuring that the ship’s systems operate in compliance with all national, international and local regulations (particularly those related to pollution prevention);
• Ensuring that the vessel maintains all company standing orders and is sailing under company policy;
• Ensuring that the vessel’s safety management system is adhered to;
• Maintaining records such as defect lists, maintenance and repair records, and statutory documentation such as oil record books;
• Working with the Captain, Mate, and Headquarters to ensure maintenance and repairs are carried out in an efficient and timely manner;
• Contributing to long range planning of repairs and maintenance by assisting in the development of refit lists and developing/participating in vessel life cycle maintenance programs;
• Conducting inspections to ensure that all systems are in operational order and that an adequate level of supplies and routine parts are available aboard the vessel;
• Maintaining and administering the preventative maintenance schedule for the vessel; and
• Troubleshooting system issues to support vessel operation and overall guest experience on each expedition;
• Providing support during the execution of the itineraries for guests on each expedition; and
• Supervising and directing crew when performing maintenance and repair duties.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
• Fourth Class Engineer Certificate:
• Extensive marine engineering experience;
• Current Marine Medical and Marine First Aid;
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills to form good working relationships with key crew members, especially the Captain and Mate;
• Ability to write, organize, and share documents on standard office computer platforms;
• Top priority on exactness, neatness and organization;
• Ability to present self well with guests; and
• Must be eligible to legally work in Canada.
Desirable Qualifications:
• Preference may be given for Third Class Engineer Certificate or higher;
• Preference may be given to engineers with chief engineer experience and demonstrated experience working alone in remote locations and in-situ troubleshooting;
• Radio Operator Certificate – Maritime Commercial;
• Experience in the application of lifecycle management and refit programs for vessel systems;
• Experience in passenger vessel operations and demonstrated excellent people skills;
• Preferred candidates will have an interest in adventure tourism and the nature and environment of the B.C. coast;
• Wilderness 1st Aid an asset; and
• Expedition leadership experience and any guiding certifications may be an asset but are not required.
