JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a results-driven team players to join our organization in the role of Nuclear Waste Operator at our Western Waste Management Facility (WWMF) located in Tiverton, ON

Working in accordance with prescribed safety procedures and regulations and reporting to the Section Manager, Western Waste Operations, the Nuclear Waste Operator will be responsible for operating WWMF systems, equipment and devices according to approved procedures and practices. The Nuclear Waste Operator will operate field equipment and control room panels as well as they perform field activities within the conditions set forth in approved programs, procedures, and instructions to meet established targets in the areas of quality, environment, health, safety, cost and staff development.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Identify potential incidents and non-compliance to applicable Acts, Regulations, Licenses and Approvals for immediate evaluation of reporting needs.
Execute control room activities and / or execute field work in accordance with approved procedures.
Monitor and perform routine and periodic sampling of all effluent and emissions from the WWMF to make certain of compliance with governing Acts, Regulations, Licenses and Certificates of Approval.
Restrict facility access to qualified staff or adequately supervised non-WWMF staff based on an assessment of potential conventional hazards and changing radiological conditions.
Maintain control of licensed radioactive sources and dosimetry control on schedule back shifts.
Participate in the development and review of work plans, operating procedures, temporary instructions, job and task analysis and operational flow sheets.
Perform of routine inspections, commissioning, testing and troubleshooting of operating systems, equipment and devices.
Participate in the identification of hazards, substandard conditions and practices, formal analysis of jobs and tasks, reporting of incidents, response to emergencies and abnormal conditions, identification of specialized work permit and rule needs, identification of assessment of potential industrial health and hygiene hazards.
Expected to be knowledgeable in the use of protective equipment and executing the work in a safe manner
Effectively execute duties associated with Specialized Work Permits (ie: Confined Space, Excavation, Work Protection, Hot Work).
Prepare quality preparation of logs, reports and records.
Accountable for the health, safety and well-being of self and others, in accordance with technical/operating procedures and standards, and includes the development of technical/ operating solutions to problems.

EDUCATION

Marine Engineering Technology Diploma
4th Class Operating Engineers Certificate issued by Technical Standards and Safety Authority

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of 3 years’ of experience operating combustion systems, process and auxiliary equipment in an industrial environment, preferably from a Thermal Generating Station, Marine or Stationary Power Plant.
Highly knowledgeable on the Legislation / Acts, Regulations, Codes and Standards that govern the management of Hazardous and Radioactive Waste Operations
Possess detailed understanding of operating parameters and reporting requirements as specified in applicable Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Operating Licenses, Environmental Protection Act – Regulation 558 [347], MOE Certificates of Approval and their conditions of issuance
Keep informed on equipment and procedural developments
Effectively maintain the skills / knowledge necessary to respond appropriately to any normal / abnormal, upset or emergency condition.
