The Arctic Research Foundation is looking for a knowledgeable, hard-working marine engineer to support science & researches operations in various locations in the Arctic. This is an excellent opportunity to experience the “Great Canadian North”, work with various world leading Academia groups and governmental organizations.

The Employee will perform duties and responsibilities as described but not limited to the descriptions below:

Assist in the process of attaining regulatory and insurance approval required for Transport Canada vessel certification, including compliance with any direction given by a marine safety inspector;
Under the direction of the Master, maintain operational and maintenance logs and all other required Transport Canada and/or Canada Shipping Act, 2001 documentation;
Ensure all duties are carried out to ensure compliance with relevant regulations;
Inspect, clean and performs electrical, plumbing, mechanical and hydraulic repairs as required to generators, compressors, pumps, deck machinery, sewage treatment system, outboard motor, water maker and other equipment and to maintain effective operation and functionality; greases and oils equipment and checks for equipment wear and tear, etc.
Conduct and record pre-departure engineering checks;
Ensure ballast management is undertaken with due regard to maintaining vessel stability including the distribution of fuel and sounding tank levels during use of/burning and refueling;
Undertake preventative maintenance to ensure efficient and safe operation of vessel, tender and all equipment including its maintenance schedule (oil change, filter change, refuel ship, sewage treatment, water maker filter change etc.);
Maintain an adequate inventory of spare parts, oils, greases, cleaning materials;
Monitor and maintain a log of gauge readings to ensure safe levels of hydraulic fluid and oxygen or air pressure;
Promote a safe work environment through routine and preventative safety equipment maintenance including keeping adequate records and actively participate in Vessel Safety Meetings.
In conjunction with all crew, ensure safety of all persons engaged in equipment operation and the loading and unloading of the vessel;
Under the supervision of the Master, participate in boat drills, fire drills and safety inspections;
Ensure that the terms and conditions of the certificate of competency (COP) that are issued to the Employee as a Marine Engineer are fully compliant;
Participates in security watches when vessel is not operational;
Adhere to Employer Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and safety Protocol (Health and Safety) as applicable.

Required Skills & Qualifications

Class 4 certification
Marine Basic First Aid;
Med's

Personnel Development & Proficiency

Remains current and in date with all certifications, medical examination and safety proficiency training expected from an Engineer and as required by Transport Canada.
Provide copies of all certifications to the Employer.

Preferred

Willingness to work in remote and isolated area for extended period of time
Able to easily multi-task.
Strong social skill.
Ability to lead by example and assist crew when necessary.

Salary: $550.00 to $700.00 /day
