Description

The ABS Polar Research Centre (PRC) is ABS’ research, development and applied engineering centre focused on marine and offshore operations in cold environments. The PRC develops and maintains the ABS ice class rules, the ABS low temperature guidance and assists ABS clients with implementation of the IMO Polar Code and creates the associated tool sets to support these rules and regulations. PRC staff are responsible for participation, management and reporting on projects undertaken collaboratively by ABS with Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN). ABS staff are occasionally responsible for managing project work-term students and interns.

In addition, the PRC is ABS’ client service provider aimed at assisting owners/operators be prepared and comply with Polar waters regulatory requirements. As many vessels are seeking Polar Code certification, ABS staff often assists ship owners/operators along their path to ABS issuance of their vessel’s Polar Ship Certificate.

The successful candidate is anticipated to grow into the role as the primary ABS subject matter expert (SME) with respect to ship and offshore ice resisting structures.

Qualifications


A PRC structural engineer will:

· Serve as a member of technical project teams. Responsible for carrying out assigned duties to complete projects on schedule and within budget.

·Ensures the delivery of high quality service and maintenance of good relations with customers and coworkers.

Stay actively informed concerning technical, business and management developments affecting ABS and its customers, and communicates this information promptly to management.

· Actively promotes the services and capabilities of ABS throughout the technical and business community.

Write and presents technical papers and reports concerning areas of expertise and work performed.

Provide day-to-day advice on areas of technical expertise to ABS Technology and ABS Engineering staffs

Be responsible for development of necessary Rule changes and/or Rule development projects as assigned. Provide advice as necessary related to the application of Rules and Regulations.

·Ensure that all ABS Quality System requirements with regard to technical work within assigned areas of responsibility are fulfilled.


Perform selected ABS Engineering reviews and analysis

The PRC is a unique entity with the ABS organization addressing an unique market sector perspective. As such a PRC Engineer is anticipated to:

· Identifies client needs and market opportunities

· Identify project scopes

· Draft business proposal

· Execute project scope

· Act as primary point of contact with clients


Knowledge Skills and Abilities Required

BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of three (3) years of related engineering experience, or a MS degree from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of one (1) year of related engineering experience, or Ph.D. from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of one (1) year of related experience. A degree in Naval Architecture or a structures discipline is preferred

·Requires Engineer-In-Training (EIT) Certificate eligibility as a minimum. Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license in Newfoundland and Labrador is a plus.

Working knowledge Ice Class rules (ABS and its competitors)

An understanding of ice mechanics.

Sound understanding of the Finite Element Method including non-linear analysis and experience using commercially available FE packages, e.g. ANSYS, LS-DYNA, ABAQUS, and/or Nastran

A working knowledge of Matlab, MS Excel (including Visual Basic), and MS Word.

Ability to work well with others.

Excellent oral and written communication skills in English language. Oral communication skills in French an asset.

The human relations skills necessary to maintain positive relationships with clients and peers.

Ability to develop and implement logical solutions to complex problems.

Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
