JOB TITLE: Engineer
JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the continuous operation and ongoing maintenance of all ships systems while at sea. This includes regular watches of the engine room and all under deck spaces.

JOB TYPE: Full-time, hourly

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

General Responsibilities

· Always presents a professional attitude, appearance and demeanor and assist in ensuring that other crew members display similar attributes.
· Able to stay motivated when working independently or as part of a team.
· Follow all tasks as directed by the vessel Master or Company management.
· Follow all health and safety policies and procedures as instructed.

Vessel Operation

Regular monitoring and maintenance of (where necessary) main and auxiliary engine systems, genset and electrical systems, pneumatic systems, domestic systems, hydraulic systems, reefer systems, fuel oil and lube oil filtration and pumping systems, pumping (water) systems, black water systems, etc.
Fuel management including the completion of all required documentation (vessel fuel log, engineering trip report, engineers watch log, etc.). This specifically includes regular dipping of ships fuel tanks to verify fuel status during the course of any vessel trip.
Operation of bulk fuel pumping systems.
Domestic water use management (Aurora Explorer).
Carry out regular engine room and machinery space watches including but not restricted to:

Lube oil, Hydraulic and Drive oil levels check
Coolant level check
Bilge level check (including periodic soundings of void spaces)
Watertight door security and integrity, deck hatches, security and integrity
Generator and electric system check
Electrolyte level check
Grease and lubrication as required.
Reefer containers check.
Fire watch regular rounds
Air compressor check
Washer/dryer and other appliance safety check (ie: lint clean out, etc.).

On vessel shutdown, ensure all shore power connections are properly engaged.
Run up, test, and operate the bilge pumping and water pumping systems on a regular basis (ie: each trip).
Assist with boat and fire drills as outlined by the muster list for the Engineer.
Ensure all night switches are “off” and rendered safe on fuel equipment, cargo handling equipment, equipment/vehicles on deck or off-loaded ashore and all other equipment where necessary.
Ensure all fuel hoses are stored in a safe manner.
Account for and maintain company equipment for sounding fuel tanks.
Where directed by the Master, assist in, supervise or provide training to other deck personnel in respect to the safe and efficient operation of ships equipment (i.e. cranes, forklifts, anchor winch, etc.) and cargo (i.e. heavy equipment).
Ensure the safety and direction of repair of cargo handling equipment and gear (assistance to the Mate). Regularly inspect all cargo handling equipment and gear and make entries in Machine Register.
Prior to departure check that vessel is adequately watered and fueled.
Assist with securing and anchoring the vessel.

Freight Handling

Assist as required with cargo loading and unloading, as directed by the Ship’s Master.
Ensure that the discharge of pollutants at no time exceeds that permitted under the Pollution Prevention Act and that the Master is informed immediately of any excessive discharge.
Oversee deployment of any containment gear carried aboard.
Willingness to learn to drive tractors, tankers and heavy equipment.

Maintenance Duties

· When not scheduled to sail, you will be scheduled to work with the maintenance team in the yard.
· Assist with shore side maintenance and refit work.
· Ensure that a proper and timely flow of maintenance, repair, spare parts requisitioning, etc. is communicated to shore side staff, ensuring adequate lead time for ordering of parts.
· Run up, check and maintenance of all portable equipment on a regular basis, (ie: pumps, outboard motors, etc.).
· Maintain all entries in the vessel “Machine Register” and with particular attention to all lifting appliances. Keeping of electrical connections in weathertight condition when not in use (ie: female to male connections).
· Regularly check all electrical extension cords and other portable electrical equipment for defects and hazards.
· Account for an maintain all “Specialty” ships safety equipment (ie: electrical handling gloves, foam fire equipment, spill containment supplies, etc.).

Be proactive in maintaining a dialogue concerning vessel maintenance and repair with the company maintenance superintendent.

Maintain an adequate inventory of (engineering) ships stores and supplies (ie: filters, tool,

V-belts, rags, spare hydraulic parts, etc.)

· Keep Master (and/or cook and steward on Aurora Explorer) informed of all maintenance (or planned maintenance) which will (or may) affect the operation of the vessel and galley.

TICKETS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Must hold one of the following:

· SVMO
· Class 4

Useful but not mandatory (will have opportunity to earn on the job)

· Forklift Operators Ticket
· WHIMIS
· TDG (Transport of Dangerous Goods)
· SOTO (Supervision of an Oil Transfer Operation)

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: $29.63-$31.11 per hour
