First Engineer

Job Overview

Operation of propulsion, auxiliary machinery and maintenance of the vessel, its machinery and equipment in compliance with the Chief Engineer's instructions.

The function of the First Engineer involves at all times safe, efficient and cost-effective operations, maintenance and repair of the vessel and technical installations, in accordance with the Chief Engineer's instructions, relevant legislation, class requirements, and the Company's Management System.

Qualifications/Requirements

High School Diploma or Equivalent
Second Class Marine Engineering Certificate of Competency.
Proven track record in relevant offshore experience within the marine sector; recent offshore standby experience on a PSV or AHTS vessel is strongly preferred.
Demonstrated Leadership Ability, communicating with charterers, safety leadership and employee/team development.

MED in Basic Safety Training

MED in Survival Craft Training

MED in Advanced Firefighting

MED for Officers

Able to operate software applications as applicable to the position.

Must pass Physical (Marine Medical with no restrictions, Drug Screen and Background Check).

Responsibilities

The First Engineer shall keep the Chief Engineer, the Shipboard Management Team and other functions on board well informed so that they can co-ordinate and control activities toward maximum safety, environmental protection and quality.
The First Engineer is second in command in the Engine Department and is in all respects responsible for conducting his duties in the best interest of the company.

The First Engineer shall keep himself/herself continuously informed of all matters concerning operation, maintenance and repair enabling him to take over from the Chief Engineer in cases of necessity.

Control and supervision of engineers, ratings and teams daily working plans, associated with watch and work routines.

The First Engineer shall report to the Chief Engineer such defects, non-conformances and other matters, which could affect safe fuel and sludge operations, or could present a risk of health and safety or pollution, quality to work or operational efficiency.

Perform engineer's watch and work routines, and at all time ensure its observance.

Motivation of engineers and crew, and creation of a safe working environment on board.

Issuing appropriate orders and instructions in a clear and simple manner.

Understand the importance of briefing and debriefing to ensure efficient teamwork.

Training of supervised personnel which includes:

Orientation.
Health and safety.
Environmental protection.
Use of manuals and procedures.
Proper use of tools and equipment.
Standard maintenance and operating practices.

Create a better working environment by using the least hazardous chemicals, and by ensuring that chemicals are used in a safe and responsible way.
Perform maintenance schedule according to PMS System.
Perform day-to-day work schedules for unplanned events.
Disperse outstanding work to engineers and engine crew.
Maintenance of order and cleanliness in the engine room.
Develop the skills and confidence of the more junior members of the team.
Propose to the Chief Engineer necessary training requirements concerning engineers and crew.
Examine within the scope of responsibility overtime forms prepared by engineers and ratings.
Consumption of consumables, stores, spares and lube oils to be reported to the Chief Engineer.
Check stock of stores and spare parts in order to ensure that minimum requirements can be kept at all times.
Check delivery of stores and spare parts according to forwarding advise from suppliers.
