Watchkeeping /Duty Engineer

Overview



We are seeking a Watchkeeping/Duty Engineer with a demonstrated ability to manage assigned duties promptly and efficiently. This position will be based on the FRPD 309, a trailing suction hopper dredger that is currently getting ready for the upcoming dredging season in June 2021.



Duties & Responsibilities



Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Follow the Chief Engineer's Standing orders
Ensure that all officers under the Watchkeeping Engineer keep him/her fully advised at all times on matters relating to ship and machinery condition, crew safety, and all potential hazards and risks
Keep the Chief Engineer appraised of issues that could affect the safe operation of the ship and the safety of its crew
Alert the Chief Engineer when any situation occurs that would risk the ship, crew or environment
Maintain propulsion and power generation systems within safe operating parameters
Monitor and maintain mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, control equipment and dredging systems
Monitor, maintain and record critical vessel operations including fuel levels of the day tank and settling tank, levels in dirty water tanks, sludge tanks and main engine sump tanks
Perform routine check on machineries (oil/water level, temperatures and pressure)
Drain water from starting air bottles and air systems; water/sludge accumulated on F.O. daily tanks
Report and document incidents, repairs, failures, use of spare parts and special activities
Perform watch duties
Perform miscellaneous repairs and tasks as directed by the Chief Engineer
Executing and supervising tasks as ordered by the Chief Engineer


Trained and familiarized Engineers are authorized to work independently during their watch in the engine room. The Watchkeeping Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer. The Duty Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer and/or the Watchkeeping Engineer.


Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

Certificate of Competency
Minimum - Transport Canada Fourth-Class Engineer, Motor Ship
Marine Medical Certificate, Transport Canada
Certificate of Proficiency in Basic Safety Training
Certificate of Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats
Certificate of Proficiency in Advance Fire Fighting
Marine Advanced First Aid


Working Conditions

12-hour days with overtime as required
3-week rotation (typically two weeks on and one week off)
Unionized position with the Canadian Merchant Service Guild
