Chief Engineer, Polar Icebreaker

The Chief Engineer, Polar Icebreaker provides Technical Management and Governance across all engineering and technical activities within assigned ship design and build projects, ensuring that the design of the vessel meets customer, regulatory, classification society and Seaspan requirements.

The position is also responsible for developing people, processes and systems in support of ship design & build projects.


Responsible for project technical delivery to the Vice President, Technical and is accountable for ensuring engineering governance is applied across assigned projects.
Fosters the application of the highest levels of professional standards, quality & ethics across relevant engineering tasks to ensure customer satisfaction and strengthen customer relationships.
Solution/system integrator; provides technical overview and governance of integration across multiple engineering systems to ensure full alignment and integration with other engineering & human systems.
Advances collaboration for the resolution of technical issues to ensure achievement of project objectives and customer satisfaction.
As necessary, seeks customer interaction in solving technical challenges in engineering design and ensuring operational perspective is captured in solutions.
Supporting the Director - Technical Authority, in applying delegation of authority to engineers within VSY and the wider project team.

Chief Engineer’s Authority

Responsible for overall ship integration.
Key customer interface to agree overarching solutions and technical compliance methods with the customer.
Key technical interface with Seaspan’s Tier 1 design teams. Collaboration with major equipment suppliers to resolve major technical/integration issues.
Key Member of the Change Control Committee.
Final arbiter of divergent, conflicting or overarching technical solutions during design and build.
Technical Assurance / Governance manager at platform and project level.
Authority for governance issues with Classification Society, Transport Canada, Coast Guard under Director – Technical Authority.
Authority for all safety issues related to the design and engineering.

General Responsibilities

Overall owner of vessel margins and ensuring that margin consumption is monitored and that any corrective action is implemented in a timely manner.
To ensure lessons learned from previous projects are not repeated.
To review the design maturity at project set points in accordance with Maturity Management Plan.
To proactively drive the ship’s Technical Risks to a satisfactory and manageable level.
Responsible for successful design integration of transverse issues including noise and vibration, winterization, workflow and ergonomics, General Arrangement, human factors.
To lead all aspects of the vessels requirements development, validation and verification, and ensure a smooth handover to the test and trials team.
To ensure successful appraisal of the vessel design by designated Classification Society in accordance with all applicable laws, regulations, rules and standards.
To ensure that the vessel safety and environmental case is developed with rigour and in a manner that supports progressive design development.
Technical interface with Seaspan’s Quality Assurance/Quality Control dept.

Development and Mentorship

Develop the role and responsibility of Chief Engineer in charge of a ship design team for VSY.
Support Engineering managers in developing and nurturing talent.
Drive a culture of innovation and engineering excellence.

Education and Experience

A Master’s degree in a relevant Engineering subject area is required, with preference for Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering.
Professional Engineering designation in the Province of British Columbia is required or ability to acquire this within 12 months.
Minimum 20 years post-secondary experience in a new ship design / construction environment is crucial.
Experience of winterized/polar designs and complex vessel integration is preferred.
Experience working with a diverse integrated project team is required.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

Technical knowledge and understanding of Classification Society and Regulatory Body rules and requirements.
Demonstrated ability to work independently to support solutions to complex technical problems.
Ability to discuss all disputed technical questions with the customer and to come to constructive solutions.
Ability to manage review meetings with engineering and customer effectively.
Above average analytical skills to gather and analyze/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as an integral part of the collective analysis/synthesis process.
Strong technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports.
Strong communication skills including verbal and listening.
Solid understanding of ship design and CAD software, document control systems and databases.
Good organizational skills
Availability and willingness to travel to such locations and with such frequency as the employer determines is vital or desirable to meet its business needs.
Exercise good judgments and make decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.
PC proficiency required. Solid understanding of basic Microsoft Office 2010 software suite (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint).
