I always thought it strange that this fellow was portrayed as so incompetent. After all, no company is going to run out and hire someone like that the put him in charge of their newest and biggest ship. When you see that the company is off the hook if the captain is found incompetent, then the rest follows.

Yes indeed, the "lone gunmen" the one "bad apple" defense has been so reliable for so many. Dare not go deeper, question the idea of "barrels" and how they are handled, metaphorically speaking. Interesting article.
