Its warm but not very calm where I am in the Dominican Republic. Constant swell is driving me mad, but at least the machinery is behaving and we have some internet... once in while. so that's a bonus.

Indeed Merry Christmas to you and yours, and hopefully a more prosperous year in 2016. But given the low price per barrel, it will be a very difficult year for many of us seafarers, who are always the first to be affected.

Keep your chin up!

Indeed a belated Merry Xmas to everyone.
Unlike Martin I am in the cold North sea battering through Storm Eva, but like him enjoying Internet Access, and a satellite phone, it is a wonderful thing after coming to Sea in the days of the "Marconi Sahib", long before the internet, cell phones or direct dialled Duplex link calls on MF.
The low oil prices are killing every business working in the North Sea, from the oil and shipping companies, Aberdeen Airport to the Taxi Drivers and Hotels in Aberdeen. No relief in site.
A previous (Labour) UK Government passed a law to make the Country carbon Neutral by 2040!! As I understand it, that will require all oil, coal and gas fired power stations to be shut down and replaced with an estimated 100 new Nuclear power stations over the next 25 years.
All road and rail transport will have to be electric by then and all domestic heating and cooking will have to be electric.

The World has signed up to a similar agreement in Paris and if it is not "fudged" then no new coal mines or oil wells will have to be developed and many of the existing ones will be shut down before they are depleted. It looks like the only way for oil and coal prices is down, if the "Green Dream" is to come true.

Happy New year everybody!!!

A very merry Christmas and a happy hogmany to all our readers! :) Looks like the US/Saudi plan is working in the oil patch, expensive extraction in Canada, North Sea and Russia will be forced to close up shop, no point in producing a barrel of oil which will fetch $35 if it costs $60 to $70 to produce!

Full ahead both then for the gas conversion boys, but is the grass " greener " or not? The subject seems to be gaining in momentum over here in the UK / EU. Seems a leaner burn, cleaner emissions even before CATS / Scrubbers etc but more expensive again. Seeing black clouds over the horizon of an approaching ship hull down might be a thing of the past. Bet domestic gas prices will rise.

Oh you fellows are a cheery lot! That's next weeks worry. It may happen or more strings are pulled by the puppeteers.
You know BP, all this technology is a great thing, but I hear stories from the crew about how hard it is to get news from home, like the water heater failing and they can't do anything to help. I wonder in some ways if the 6 week old newspapers a and having to watch the same movies for another 5 weeks, because the package didn't make the ship before sailing , wasn't that terrible a thing! At the time it was a crisis LOL.
No one would be willing to go back to the old days. I have been ashore 18 years this past October, it is amazing what advances in ship/shore communications have been made in that time.

I bet you would be glad to go back to the old days ref price of beer/woodbines/petrol coupled with today's money though. Still got my MF SSB licence from 1973 but haven't used 2182 Mz for years. Like BP said link calls via Niton and Portishead long gone, last MF set I had was 14 years ago and it seemed that there was hardly anyone else on channel. End of yet another era.

Hi everyone,

With regard to JK comments about communication, in the past our Partners /Wives would have just got one with it and got someone to fix the water heater when we were away and told us about in the next letter they wrote. It appears spouses are becoming more dependant on their seafarer partner trying to run the home remotely.

On a wetter note we just got rushed out of Aberdeen harbour Saturday evening, took a big wave just as we turned out of channel, all the deck cargo shifted, despite being lashed down with the tugger winches and all the Deck planking came up in one Bay. The Harbour is now closed and we are hove to waiting till about Tuesday, when they expect the harbour to re open, so we can go in and get the cargo properly stowed or transferred to another ship and the Decks repaired. Fortunately nobody hurt.

What a start to the new year for you then, could be worst though you could be out on deck drilling and tapping out those sheared bolts, bet it's a right old mess too bouncing around. Happy new year hopefully to you from now on in .

The must have been a big greener BP! A friend of mine was on an AHS, the chain cargo went over the side in rough weather pinning the ship over on its side with all the vents tore off. That was a bad day.

The low oil price will be corrected soon, Iran will invade Saudi, wipe out the Saud line and take over the oilfields. They will soon be able to dictate the price of oil, and the currency in which it will be paid. The USA and their allies with greatest interest in the idea, Isreal, will attack Iranians which will prompt the iranians to retaliate with a crude nuclear device. Isreal will attack vigourously with their nuclear arsenal in USA. When the dust settles, the middlle eastern region will be all glass and the world will settle to 5,000 ears of peace and prosperity.
