Harnessing Tides

Post by JK »

The Bay of Fundy has 30 foot tides and more water flowing that all the major rives of the world. If they can successfully build a turbin that will withstand the water forces, it will be a cheap source of power

Twice a day the tide moves a billion tonnes of water during each tide cycle, more than the flow of all the world’s freshwater rivers combined.
The tidal bore can travel at speeds close to 15 km per hour (10 mph) and generates rapids in its wake that are between 3 and 3.5 meters (10-12 ft) high.
In the first trials the generators failed because of the sheer force of the water.

Way back when, I was working on an old ship which was entering the Bay of Fundy in the Brier Island area. We sat opposite the same piece of headland barely moving as the engines beat their heart out trying to push against the tide. Bad timing on the COs part.

Different kHz up there Tayside Way. (So Sayeth Glencannon's Decendant )
Razors run the other way, back on your face the beard will stay.
UK kettles never boil, hot water they will allways foil.
The Tay has only two a day, but down our way we have four, better class of flow and as allways produces more.
