Engineering Manager

Job Description
Reporting to the General Manager, SNC-Lavalin Defence Programs, the Engineering Manager is responsible to lead a multi-discipline engineering team located both in Halifax, NS and Victoria, BC for the provision of design agent services and engineering support to Minor War Vessels and Auxiliaries of the Royal Canadian Navy. The Engineering Manager is responsible for and provides a continual pro-active leadership approach to corporate Management, Health & Safety, Security, Quality and Environmental initiatives.

The Engineering Manager:
Leads a team of multi-discipline specialists providing services in the field of naval architecture, electrical, electronic, software and mechanical engineering;
Ensures vessels are maintained in accordance with applicable regulatory standards, planned maintenance routines and Vessel Dossiers;
Ensures completion of vessels annual condition surveys
Responsible for configuration management and reporting
Actively supports corporate, legal and contractual requirements for Occupational Health and Safety, Security and Environment. Promotes and fosters a continuing safety culture;
Obtains goods and services for the vessels ensuring best value for money through competition;
Provides ongoing support, training and direction to all direct reports regarding federal and corporate procurement regulations, internal procurement processes, SNC-Lavalin’s Procurement Policy, and ISO standards;.
Develops and fosters relationships with federal government clients, naval authorities, suppliers, corporate services, and industry executives, in order to:
Identify, understand and resolve contentious issues;
Manage expectations.
Keep abreast of and share best practices and lessons learned; and
Update the team on relevant initiatives;
Enhances the SNC-Lavalin image by actively leading a team of specialists incorporating continuous professional learning techniques;
Develops direct reports by assessing performance, identifying areas for development, coaching, mentoring, and inspiring team morale;
Establishes team objectives and ensures their achievement;
Provides leadership in solving technical and / or functional problems;
Manages (or oversees) the engineering schedule and its incorporation into the Master Schedule through the use of Professional Project Management tools.
Is willing to travel when required.

QUALIFICATIONS and EXPERIENCE
The Engineering Manager shall be a Professional Engineer and shall possess a minimum of 10 years of demonstrated professional marine work experience in engineering within the last 15 years.
Proven Engineering Manager work experience in the marine sector managing a multi-discipline engineering department.
Engineering Manager experience in the Naval environment is considered an asset
Systems engineering integration experience is an asset
A University Degree or equivalent in an engineering discipline is preferable
A working knowledge of MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint
A working knowledge of MS Project
Skills related to strategic planning, business planning, project management, communication, relationship management, customer focus, people management and leadership, facilitation, negotiation, influencing, team work, judgment, decision-making, analysis and problem solving, innovation and idea generation, report writing, computer literacy, and financial literacy.
Strong people management skills with the ability to provide direction, guidance and development.
Strong delegation and time management skills, with initiative and follow-up capabilities. A team player with the ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision.
Good understanding of Health and Safety programs.
Ability to obtain a security clearance of Reliability.
