Autonomous Ships

Post by JK »

According to Splash, the Norwegian government has backed the building of a boxship to the tune of almost 17m.

I honestly can't believe that this is going forward. Whay could go wrong!?
Are they going to build it without the systems to support a crew? Makes for a simplier ship, but what happens when things begin to fail after a couple of year? Will crew be needed to ride the ship?
Are we ready for this?

I remember 30 years ago the Japanese Governmant was testing an unmanned ship in the Sea of Japan.
Wartsilla recently did trials of remotely controlling a PSV at Sea, off the Scottish Coast for several hours in DP and normal steaming mode, the ship, Highland Guardian, Gulfmark Offshore, still had a full crew on board.
There appear to be several remote controlled or autonomous ships in the offing, that I have read about in the paper copy of the Marine Professional, I will have a look online and try to post links later.
The articles aren't clear, but I think the first stage is to do away with all the Deck Officers and conduct the Bridge operations remotely, then carry out all operations remotely and finally fully automate ships, so that they no longer have to have a qualified Deck Officer sitting at a remote control panel ashore "Driving" 4 or 5 ships at the same time.

We are all doomed, but at least they haven't automated the Supers job or the surveyors job yet, so you and JJ should make it to retirement.
It is always better to ask a stupid question than to do a stupid thing.

But what year?
Remembering The Good Old days, when Chiefs stood watches and all Torque settings were F.T.
