Description

The Manager, Naval Architecture is responsible for managing naval architectural engineering issues on new construction projects at Vancouver Shipyards. Under the direction of the Director, Engineering the Manager, Naval Architecture participates in all phases of new construction design projects including: design preparations, project and procurement planning, engineering and project risk management, engineering execution, and engineering close-out activities. These responsibilities ensure that the goals and objectives of engineering projects are accomplished within the prescribed engineering plans, schedules and budgets and that the work is in complete satisfaction of the requirements.

Duties/Accountabilities

Provides comprehensive discipline expertise in all areas of naval architecture by reviewing proposals, scopes of work, establishing budgets and schedules to ensure contract design requirements are met.
Directs technical staff for drawing issuance and design calculations to ensure timely completion of the naval architectural and structural design elements.
Develops and/or reviews specifications and design documents for contracted vessels in order to achieve customer, Classification Society and regulatory approval.
Provides mentoring and technical advice to subordinate Engineers in support of departmental replacement and succession planning.
Builds team capability by training and developing others in order to ensure future team effectiveness.
Represents the company to industry to develop understanding of Seaspan’s involvement in the Canadian marine industry and continue to build our reputation

Education and Experience

Degree specifically in Naval Architecture is required.
Minimum 10 years’ experience in naval architecture or marine structural engineering or other project management experience within a heavy industrial environment is required.
Minimum 4 years recent managerial/supervisory leadership experience required.
Shipyard experience desired.
P.Eng. EGBC status or E.I.T. status and able to apply for P.Eng. within a year.

Strong technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear detailed written technical specifications, procedures and reports.
Knowledge of financial accounting, purchasing and management systems including skills with MS Project, Primavera and IFS.
Above average organizational skills including the ability to maintain organization in a change environment, multi-task and establish priorities.
Commit to a high standard of safety and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the employer’s safety policies and rules.
Above average interpersonal skills.
Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
Exercise sound judgments and make decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions and corporate philosophy.
Travel may be required from time to time.
