The Superintendent, Maintenance & Engineering has primary responsibility for the day to day management of maintenance and engineering requirements of Seaspan Ferries (SFC) vessels. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring that vessel maintenance program is running in accordance to company policy, responding to and coordinating responses to unscheduled maintenance activities for SFC vessels, coordinating scheduled maintenance activities for SFC vessels, working with Director of Fleet Engineering and Vessel Development to compose and present annual budgets, manage capital projects (additions and alterations) for existing fleet and, manage docking planning and execution for existing fleet.


In addition, this role is responsible for formulating company policy and strategy for all aspects of vessel engineering management for vessels in operation. The role is also responsible for monitoring maintenance trends and continuous improvement of maintenance and repair methodology.


Duties/Accountabilities

Liaises with the Director Fleet Engineering & Vessel Development, Manager Vessel Operations and Commercial Managers to ensure that all crews and stakeholders have sufficient training.
Ensures that all machinery and equipment failures are investigated to determine the cause of the failure. Makes recommendations to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Consults with internal and external specialists when and as required to determine the cause of and remedy for unusual events involving vessel hull, machinery and/or equipment.
When approved, to attend shipyard and manufacturer’s facilities during FAT testing as well as Commissioning and trials.
Provide technical assistance for SFC projects as needed.
Develop and implement class approved maintenance programs as well as policy and procedure manuals for all new vessels brought into the SFC Fleet.
Keep up to date with new propulsion technology, construction and building techniques which shall include representing SFC at maritime related conferences from time to time.


Budgeting and Purchasing – New Vessels

Composes and monitors the annual budget for maintenance and repair of vessel hull, machinery and equipment as well as capital spending related to the new vessels during the integration and operating phases.
Authorises purchase and initiates order entry of purchases.
Determines the need for and plans for capital projects (additions and alterations) of vessels


Employee & Labour Relations – New Vessels

In conjunction with the Director of Fleet Engineering and Vessel Development, hires, assigns and directs engine room shipboard personnel within corporate, statutory, regulatory and collective agreement requirements.
Monitors and approves all overtime involving engine room personnel to ensure compliance with applicable collective agreements.
Provides advice, assistance and guidance to engine room shipboard personnel and has direct responsibility for ensuring that training and development meet current needs of the Company, statutory and/or regulatory requirements.
Participates in the resolution of first level complaints and grievances received from engine room personnel. Assesses the need for discipline and implements appropriate disciplinary action. With controversial matters or matters involving dismissal, consults with and provides recommendations to the Vice President, SFC for approval before taking actions.
Provides contract negotiation support to the President, SFC for collective agreements covering shipboard personnel.
Ensures familiarity with company policies and all applicable legislation and statutory requirements in the areas of employment and workplace protections, including Canada Labour Code, Human Rights Legislation, etc.
Keeps abreast of trends and legislative changes that may have an impact on SFC’s operations. Takes proactive measures to avoid potential problems and burdens.


Leadership & Management

Ensures both short and long-term planning for vessel repair, maintenance and engine room departments are in place.
Maintaining day to day operations of the Engine room department by integrating new vessels into SFC Engineering program.
In concert with the Director, Fleet Engineering & Vessel Development, develops and implements new hire training and succession planning for the engine room department by ensuring there are sufficient competent, certificated personnel available.
Develops new engineers to the fleet and ensure that company culture is developed and maintained along with the departments strategic direction.


Education and Experience

A post-secondary degree in Engineering, Technology or related disciplines; OR successful completion of an apprenticeship program which qualifies as a Power Engineer, Stationary Engineer or Marine Engineer.
Due to the unique nature of marine mechanics, equipment and machinery, preference will be given to candidates with a Marine Certificate of Competency.
A minimum of 6-8 years supervisory experience within a mechanical repair environment demonstrating a high level of technical competence and a track record of success through progressively senior positions.
Formal supervisory/management training and/or related courses is desirable.


Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

Strong project and program management abilities.
A thorough working/practical knowledge of vessel hull, machinery and equipment repair.
Exceptional abilities to diagnose, troubleshoot and exercise sound judgement under time pressure.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Strong understanding of all applicable legislation, acts and regulations for marine operations.
Ability to conduct business in a professional and ethical manner.
Ability to read and interpret complex technical specifications and drawings.
Demonstrated abilities to lead, motivate and gain respect and trust from both internal and external parties.
Passionate and takes pride in one’s profession.
Demonstrated abilities to mentor, train and transfer knowledge to other staff members.
