Job Description:

We have an immediate opening for a Marine Superintendent in our Tankers Fleet. The successful incumbent will manage the day-to-day marine operations in accordance with company policies and procedures as well as government regulations and customer expectations. Reporting to the Director, QHSE and Marine Operations, the Marine Superintendent will work directly with the Fleet Group supporting the Director, Technical Operations and the Technical Superintendents. These responsibilities include personal and operational safety and environmental protection.

Duties & Responsibilities:

As the front-line management representative, the key duties and responsibilities for the vessels assigned to them are:

Vessel Operations

Provides direct support to vessels.
Promotes and maintains standardized deck operational efficiencies.
Provides cargo related technical expertise and guidance.
Reviews and approves new cargo opportunities.
Develops and maintains fleet standards to maximize cargo loading.
Develops fleet standards related to crew cost optimization.
Monitors the condition of and assist with maintaining the safe and efficient operation of all deck and navigation related functions.
Conducts vessel visits and inspections, ensuring vessels are maintained and comply with all relevant standards.
Monitors vessel efficiency and environmental performance.

Maintenance

Assists with the arrangement and management of the work of shore side contractors.

Quality, Health, Safety, Environment & Regulatory

Ensures vessel inspection and certification requirements are maintained to regulatory, classification and industry standards.
Liaises with external authorities including flag, class and port state regulatory bodies.
Lead or be a team member in carrying out internal audits on any Company vessel.
Lead or be a team member in the investigation of any occurrence, accident or incident investigation.
Reviews the Shipboard Safety Management Committee meeting minutes.

Budgetary Control

Monitors and advises on vessel budget.
Monitors and ensures compliance with fleet plan objectives.
Coordinates efforts with both the Logistics and Purchasing departments to ensure the required supplies/equipment is delivered to the ship in the most efficient way possible.

People Management

Coordinates efforts with the Fleet Personnel department for the purposes of scheduling Captains and navigation officers and ensures assignments meet regulatory and company standards in terms of certification and experience.
Assists with the preparation of performance documents and can conduct in-person performance reviews for all Captains.
Reviews all received performance reviews for navigation officers and provides input to the Director, Technical Operations for any individual training or development requirements.
Leads with support from Fleet Personnel on any day to day performance management and disciplinary issues.

Collaboration

Liaises with the Commercial Department and Customer representatives in regard to vessel operations and cargo requirements.
Participates as a member of Marine Emergency Response / Hot Line after hours support. Any other duties or requirements as directed by the Director QHSE & Marine Operations and the Director, Technical Operations.

Qualifications:

Post-secondary education in Maritime Studies, with a preference in Nautical Science.
Chief Mate certificate of competency as a minimum, Master Mariner preferred.
Minimum of 5 years’ experience with responsibilities consistent with the position.
A proven track record of success in technical and managerial positions with relevant maritime organizations.
Experience with Product tankers mandatory.
Advanced knowledge and understanding of the Great Lakes, St. Lawrence Seaway system and Canadian east coast in terms of navigation and functions preferred.
Sound knowledge of load planning, quality and regulatory disciplines (ISM/ISO), OCIMF regulations preferred and ability to carry out incident investigation and analysis.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
Excellent organization, planning and prioritization skills with ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders as well as ship crew.
Ability to analyze and interpret technical information and drawings.
Ability to lead and motivate groups and individuals.
Strong project management skills.
Valid passport and driver’s license with no travel restrictions as extensive travel is required.

Working Conditions:

Operates in an open office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.
Requires undertaking visits to vessels on location as required.
Requires ability to travel on occasion, some of which may be international.
Operates as part of on-call rotation within department.
Requires routine after hour and weekend work.
Must have a vehicle available for use.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to climb up vertical ladders and stairways.
Ability to sit for long periods of time.
Regularly required to talk/hear.
Daily use of standard office equipment, such as computers and phones.
Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
