Most commonly used Engine

Post by jrvakil »

Hi all again,

I want to invest some money in buying some engine spares from the stock yard and keep them as stock.

Can anyone advise which engines are commonly and widely being used these days ??

Hi Jvraki,

Earlier you posted a list of your existing customers. I would have thought that your "First Port of Call" would be to ask them what engines they have on their ships, and how many of each type, then at least you have a potential customer lined up already. You can also judge the relative number of engines of each type and hence the relative numbers of spares you should carry.
Then advertise on line,e.g. on the Diesel Duck's Trading Post, and email shipping companies to tell them that you have these parts in stock ready for shipping World Wide.

Each time you deal with a potential client, explain that you are willing to build up, and hold a stockpile of engine parts for them, according to their requirements, if they will help finance you. If you can get them to pay the price you pay from the scrapyard, up front, you only have to store them until you sell them, and then make your profit.

If I may say so, you are showing a lot of entrepreneurial promise, but you appear to be lacking something, Life skills? common sense? that make me wonder just how old you are.

Hi Jvraki,
Your age explains everything, I am 57!!!
Most of us on this site are considerably older than you, and have more experience of life, bussiness and Engineering so I think we were getting a little impatient with you asking very basic questions, instead of finding out for yourself.

I have great respect for anyone who can start up their own bussiness at such a young age, so I will repeat the advice that we gave earlier, GET THE INSTRUCTION MANUALS FROM THE SHIPS THAT ARE BEING BROKEN UP.
The ships will also be a good source for any specialist tools that you require to work on the engine components, and spare parts for cylinder heads etc.. If you can not get the Instruction Manuals, Google the engine Maker's name and go to their website, they will have contact details for their Technical Help Department and also a lot of information freely available.

Maybe you can find a retired ship's engineer or Fitter that is willing to help you part time? You definitly require someone who knows the way around an Engine to help you. You appear to have good English Language skills and obviously have enough Bussiness skills to run your existing operation and to be able to expand.

Beware of the possibility of different types of Piston and Liner being used as is discussed in the Messroom forum, regarding the USCG Cutter.

Good Luck!!
