PRESENTATION - History of the Life Saving Service in Bamfield - Clay Evans

The Bamfield Lifeboat Station was established in the winter of 1907 following the tragic loss of the SS Valencia. Bamfield received its first self bailing self righting motor lifeboat in 1908. Since this time, Bamfield has had a number of lifeboats. Clay Evans will share with us both the history and some of his personal experiences with the life boat service.
The 100th anniversary of the Bamfield Lifeboat Station will be celebrated in Bamfield with a symposium June 13 to 15. For more information check www.bamfieldlifeboat100.ca

Clay Evans is the current Officer in Charge of the Bamfield Lifeboat Station and wrote a definitive book on the history of marine lifesaving. As well as his navigational certification, Clay Evans holds a Masters degree from Cardiff University in Marine Law.
Clay plans to bring a guest who is a young fellow from Bamfield (actually a Canadian who just finished two tours of duty in Iraq as a US Navy Rescue Swimmer) is studying engineering in Victoria and is interested in becoming a marine engineer.
