2012 March - CIMarE VIB tech meeting in Victoria

Post by The Dieselduck »

At the March Meeting on Thursday, March 15th, 2012, in the Lower Lounge of the Officer's Wardroom, at the Canadian Navy Base in Esquimalt branch member Martin Leduc will be speaking about a very intriguing concept.

In Martin’s words - " The aim of the presentation is to introduce professional Marine Engineers to Blue Riband, and solicit a discussion, with the ultimate goal to achieve real world, implementable solutions, in a timely fashion.

Blue Riband is a name given to a project that looks at various problems with the maritime industry's human capital supply. The major issues are well known, but there are also other far greater implications of our long and continued inaction.

The project focuses on a fictional entity called Blue Riband, set in 2020. Blue Riband is a not for profit, employee cooperative, providing marine engineering services to the shipping community. Its overarching goal is high quality in service, and by default, sustainability on numerous aspects of the profession. Blue Riband takes a holistic approach to the shipping industry’s major problem, human resources at sea and ashore, and aims to make the profession more dynamic and adaptable, with the aim of becoming a standard for other nations.

Yes, it is a grand scheme, but we’ve been hearing about dire predictions for over 15 years, about shortages of shipping professionals. These predictions are now upon us, and causing damage to our industry, yet, we have not heard of any viable solution that truly addresses the problems in the short or long term. This shortage causes long-term issues, which have far greater implications than just filling sea-goings roles. The presentation’s aim is to present real solutions that are workable, but more importantly, a starting point for action.

Due to unscheduled need for me to return to work, the presentation is being rescheduled.

It is expected to occur two weeks later then originally scheduled, on or about March 28, or 29th at the same location.
