I was also very surprised at this, as an ex. seafarer I would have at least hoped he had the notion to phone or visit the bridge and mentioned the smell, especially after he had "spotted a thin, wispy plume of brownish-yellow smoke rising from between two stacks of containers".
Hindsight is always a wonderful thing, but just maybe had he mentioned something the outcome could have been different?

Ive got a wood stove burning at home most of the time, even with that smell comfortably ingrained, I always drop everything I am doing and investigates when I smell smoke. Seems silly to ignore that on a ship...

The master was interviewed by CBC and it will be aired on the Fifth Estate on Friday at 2100. Be interesting to see what he comes up with.
