Superintendent

Seaspan Ship Management Ltd. is currently accepting applications for a Superintendent to join the Operations Department. Reporting to the Fleet Manager, this position is responsible for the safe, reliable and economical operation of the ships assigned. The Superintendent applies knowledge of engineering, man-management, shipping-industry regulations, commercial and legal considerations and guides sea-staff onboard assigned vessels. The Superintendent also takes initiative to continuously improve the performance of assigned ships and strengthens the teamwork between ship and office. The ideal candidate will be self-driven and deadline-oriented and must have strong organizational, multitasking and interpersonal skills. This person will work independently and in a team environment and must demonstrate a positive attitude and ability to work in a fast-paced, challenging environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

Operations:

Guides, advises, and monitors the ships’ operations. Thinks ahead with the ships’ leading staff to assist them in their planning for the medium and longer term maintenance work on board
Arranges and manages supply of spares, stores and services to the ships for planned maintenance and breakdown repairs.
Researches information of a technical nature related to ships’ equipment breakdowns, malfunctions, improvements, upgrades or modifications for the reliable long-term performance of the ships
Prepares for scheduled dry dockings, surveys and repairs on assigned ships from a technical and commercial point of view

Compliance:
Manages vessels in full compliance with local and international rules and regulations; and Seaspan’s Safety Management System
Analyses and feeds back information on the ships’ performance to the Master and Chief Engineer onboard. Ensures compliance with current terms of employment of the ships (charter-party terms) and other commercial concerns
Ensures compliance with all necessary operational certification and survey requirements applicable to assigned ships

Inspections:
Visits ships in port and/or sails with Seaspan ships to reasonably ascertain that they are operated in a safe, reliable and economical way
Monitors function and performance during ship visits and initiates effective problem solving of matters on board, whether these are technical, quality-assurance, health and safety, commercial or personnel in nature
Takes ownership of any issue with respect to assigned vessels and sees the issue through to resolution

Budget preparation, monitoring and control:
Prepares budgets in the required detail for the yearly operation of his assigned ships, scheduled dry dockings, surveys, repairs and ad-hoc modifications and repairs within required timelines
Demonstrates a thorough understanding of building budgets and understands that budgets are guidelines, subject to needs of the ships to be operated in a safe and economically sensible manner
Monitors expenses of assigned vessels and submits monthly variance reporting tracks against budget

Leadership:
Ensures that all reporting employees adhere to company policies and procedures
Evaluates and reports on the performance of the Masters and Chief Engineers of his ships using the company fleet personnel management systems
Demonstrates commitment to Seaspan’s Maritime Resource Management values
Promotes teamwork between ship and office and develops good working relationships with officers of assigned ships
Communicates expectations to direct reports; manages performance and provides leadership and support to team members
Performs other duties as required

Qualifications & Abilities:
External candidates must have at least one year of experience as a Technical Superintendent in a company managing handy-max sized (or larger) vessels engaged in international trading and must have a minimum of one full year in rank as a Chief Engineer.

Internal candidates must have completed three contracts as a Chief Engineer with Seaspan
English language skills, both verbal and in writing, must be effective and suitable for a multi-cultural working environment
Strong technical knowledge
Adequate administrative and computer systems skills
Class 1 Marine Engineer certificate either valid or last renewed within the previous five years
Degree in Marine Engineering or equivalent

Additional Desired Qualifications:
Experience working with container ships
Education in mechanical engineering or naval architecture is an asset
Diploma of Ship Superintendency
Previous experience with new-builds and dry-dockings preferred

Job Demands:
Regular international travel is required and may be on short notice
Must have mobility to conduct vessel inspections
Will be required to carry a Blackberry and check regularly outside of office hours.
Must maintain home internet connection for work outside of office hours.

Salary Range:
Salary range is CAD $120,000 – $135,000 per annum, depending experience. A benefits package is provided which includes MSP, extended health and dental package, life insurance, short and long term disability, and RRSP matching.

As this position is based in Vancouver, preference will be given to candidates who have status to work in Canada (citizen or permanent resident) and/or who are internal candidates.
