maybe im wrong, but this looks like a northern forum. i like the topics. is there a forum anyone knows about that pertains more to the gulf?

sorry, im not trying to belittle or localize this forum. i just dont see much about the GOM.

That's probably because none of us can work in the GOM because of the Jones Act.

ive noticed that a bunch of sailors on here are not from us. so i guess that answers that.

These forums are for everyone of seafaring background, from all over the world. The main site has always garnered about 40% of its visitors from Canada, because thats where I am based out off. We get an additional 20% from the US and the rest from all parts of the world. The topics and their authors therefore reflect this visitor trend.

I am happy you drop by and are willing to share your insight about the activities in the Gulf of Mexico. Up to this point, I have not seen too many post regarding this area, therefore I haven't made a section for it. I would be happy to introduce a specific section for if you think theyre would be active discussion about it.

im not sure how big a crowed you would draw from it. i think the site you have is just great. ive never freally participated or came across this kind of site, so its good to be able to exchange with people of the same industry.

there are quite few canadians working in the GOM, mostly from east coast.

Not exactly easy to get work for an american outfit unless you have contacts on the inside and can prove you fall into that "specialist" skill set that allows you to get a waiver as a "foreign national".

You'd be far better off to pursue something in another area. The companies in the GOM are all very clannish, anti-union and although they hire those from other areas they tend to treat them a little less favorable than locals. Seems to be quite a few Canadian companies looking for people these days.

ive been in the gulf for 6 years with the same out fit. very cajun dominated, but they treat me pretty good. no complaints.

In all fairness, I have never worked in the GOM. I have however worked with many companies, whose roots are there.

In general I think the guys are pretty good, but do appear limited in their " world wide knowledge "..............but very genuine about it. I think for a guy that has worked world wide in the offshore oil patch, on PSV's, AHTS or dive boats, working in the GOM would be a bit of a culture shock...........not to mention, you have to be married to your sisters second cousin, twice removed !!

When I started in the Offshore game, I worked predominately in Asia, and West Africa............thats where are boats were.

Occasionaly we would get part timers come over from the North Sea !! Well as you can imagine, North Sea Tigers ............and we were the South Sea Pussies !! It still exists...........however, it has changed a bit. Sitting on a UT 704 in the Taiwan Strait on typhoon watch is just as ugly as the NS.............as I am sure you can imagine.

The work force on boats outside of the GOM.............was - and for the most part still is - non American. Its an Industry jibe. Rig pigs, well that a whole new ball game !!!
