Main Gearbox, ie drive to prop.

No it was beyond repair, that was the pinon drive, the bull wheel also had a small crack, time to get a new bull wheel 5 weeks. No choice, two new gears.

Yes...you are correct. Buying new ones is the only way...Severely damaged.

20 years ago we opened a GB after finding fragments in the filter. Everyone looked at the fist sized chunk gone out of the main wheel, then we boxed it back up and sailed the next day.
There was a lot of funny "stuff" on there. I think this about the same time I pointed out to the Chief that there was three loose hold down bolts on one side of the main. Years later I heard the engine blew up sometime after I left.
